After almost 9 years, our home #laptop is good for nothing but the recycle bin.

What are sustainable solutions for personal laptops?

#Repairable, #upgradable, socially responsible, made from #recycled material, hopefully conflict-free #electronics.... all of it.

Like my #FairPhone (or better) but a laptop. Help me #fediverse please.

@lavergnetho Why is it "good for nothing" ? What's wrong with it ?

I've got a 15 year old and it's still a perfectly good driver/console for my 3D printer.

Make, model and configuration would be useful.

Battery replacement at that age would be an easy fix if that's the issue. If it's slow and sluggish and running Microsoft then an upgrade to something lean and efficient like Linux would be obvious.

What is the issue?

@bbeaker hei Bob. It is a MacBook Air "something". It won't work unless plugged (battery down). And it keeps pushing us towards heavier OS versions. I would for sure go for Linux-based machine today.

@lavergnetho why not try a Linux based OS on it first? As for the battery, I don't think it's realistic to expect spare parts for electronic devices ten years into their lifecycle, no matter who you buy it from. Even Fairphone doesn't have that long support..

Exactly. Replacement batteries are relatively cheap, and a 10-year-old Intel CPU is perfectly good at running Linux.
