Why is it that Apple Homekit accessories cost more than Alexa or Google Home devices and yet they’re far more temperamental and difficult to set up? 🤬🤬🤬

@ottocrat I don't know, but it's probably worth it, because Amazon actively despises you, Google is at best indifferent and at worst sees you the way it's said oligarchs see the Russian people, as "the shit they grow their money in", Apple at least wants to be loved if not actually worshipped, which while not ideal is the least horrifying of the three.

@pieist That’s why I pay more - I trust Apple more with my data than I do A or G, because selling my data isn’t how they make their money - but usually the UX with Apple is also better. Not with Homekit though.

@ottocrat Apple sort of reminds me of the Sony products of my youth. Sony went through this phase where they'd provide these combined or shortcut controls with all manner of assumptions about how you wanted to use the device, which was not what I wanted at all. I wanted a switch or a knob for every fundamental function which just did what it said.

Apple makes it easy to do what they think you want to do. Trouble is they cannot in their wildest dreams imagine what I want to do, let alone provide the basic, presumption-free knobs and switches that would let me set it up for myself.

@pieist I recognise that and it annoys me, but as long as stuff ‘just works’ I can live with it. My problem with Homekit is that it doesn’t just work. I have to reset and reinstall smart accessories regularly; I never had to do this with Alexa.
