@davidbrin The current path of AI reminds me of a bit in Stephenson's "Anathem", in which this parallel world's infosphere is awash in "bogons": dis- and misinformation spanning the full spectrum of wrongness, all of it continually generated by systems which have long since escaped control. The principal occupation of this world's IT caste is just maintaining the filters that make it possible to use their internet at all.
I thought he was being hyperbolic at the time, now "prescient" seems closer.
