I wonder if being an old fart who never listens to Billie Eilish made the opening titles of True Detective S4 far more effective for me, because instead of a familiar song I’d heard a hundred times before, it was so strange and unsettling, and seemed tailor-made for the story.

@gregeganSF

That song is the culmination of a long trend in slick but intimate production of women's voices.

The first time I noticed it was this song: youtube.com/watch?v=Xgslrh-efv

I'm only lukewarm interesting in Bjork, but that song makes me weep like a baby. Much later I discovered that this album is essentially a collaboration with Matmos, which explains why I love it.

@gregeganSF True Detective S1 was just riveting.

But we could not get through S2 and S3 - they lacked character development, particularly compared with the unique and consistent characters in S1.

S4 is better, we might finish it, but still the characters are incompetent and lacking in nuance or depth, or particularly, a sense of humor: we find them all annoying.

We're kind of hoping for an ending like this: dailymotion.com/video/x3bnzme

But we doubt it will happen.
