@TechNews Why quote a garbled slashdot post when you could just link to the story itself? It's a very decent arstechnica synopsis derived from a JAMA report, and here's a link to it:
@lauren I can believe that. I wish I could believe that the "homeless veteran" part of it would cut any ice with them, but history suggests otherwise.
@lauren Be reasonable. The Republican Party can't go ejecting members for being grifters and frauds now, can they? Where would it end? That's be like the NFL ejecting players for, um, playing football.
@lauren Many instance operators are offering a Mastodon Blue subscription, which is a lot like a regular subscription but comes with the xtra warm glow™️ of supporting your instance.
@SocraticEthics Please don't harass them. They're trying to fend off an attack from bad actors who are almost certainly Russian or acting on Russia's behalf.
@SocraticEthics You might delete this toot. They're under cyberattack and encouraging people to bother them on your behalf just occupies time better spent dealing with the problem.
@lauren Lovely sight gags in that one: the liquor store robbery, the traffic cop who doesn't know what happened to his, and the gangland types being the only discreet ones.
@lauren The very first episode of Saturday Night Live had this spin on it.
(Had to get it from this obscure site, I think they don't want it on YouTube for some reason.)
@freemo Their every encounter with Occam's Razor leaves them looking like the bad guys at the end of a Wolverine movie.
@lauren I was behind one on my motorcycle for miles on the freeway one day. I looked in vain for myself lookin all badass on Street View for some time after that, then eventually forgot about it.
@drvolts Gotta love a man who puts my money where his mouth is.
No, wait, not love. The other thing.
@georgetakei Ignore what they say and watch what they do.
@olavf @JamesGleick He did double the initiation fee for Mar-a-Lago to 200K in January 2017; pretty cute breaking the Emoluments Clause the moment you take office, no?
More pertinently, private clubs do check that the people coming in belong there; I'd be amazed if logs weren't kept.
Republican expresses outrage that the White House doesn’t keep visitor logs for Biden’s home. Does the New York Times:
Check and discover that the White House has never kept visitor logs for the private home of any President or Vice President, so this pretend outrage doesn’t pass the laugh test? Or,
Carry the GOP’s water and amplify the fake outrage, declaring that it “highlights the political danger for the President.”
Niche post for those interested in the impact of politics on religion ( usually the analysis is the other way around):
The ostentatiously Catholic ruling party in Poland is driving down church attendance at an accelerating rate. Only 28% of Poles still attend mass, down from 40% when PiS was first elected in 2015.
Politicization of the church turns out to be bad for the church
@rwhe @rudytheelder Many people, particularly younger, fit men, don't want an electric wheelchair. I've known a few. They'd absolutely hate the idea and would never use one.
@rwhe @rudytheelder Oh, I see. You're asking why they didn't do so once they needed him again, as opposed to as a discarded veteran. It seems to me that he was easier to control this way, particularly if they could hold out the promise as they did. After all he didn't need working legs to lay in a VR capsule.
@rahmstorf I've stayed at the Bridge Hotel right next to it a couple of times and yet still somehow contrived never to learn how to pronounce Magere Brug.
@rwhe @rudytheelder In fairness this is addressed in the film: it's an overt demonstration of the callousness of the civilization of which he's a part. They could fix him up but they don't have to, so they don't. Plenty more where he came from. The evil general guy actually promises early on to use his clout to get him fixed up in return for his cooperation.
@Sundae_Gurl Reminds me of that old Jon Stewart line about Republicans referring to certain practices at Guantanamo as "freedom tickling".
