Guernsey. Absolutely plotting the UK's downfall with both hands. Just look at those smug cows if you don't believe me.

As they have done routinely in the past. When Russia asks for "peace" they mean "time to solidify our gains and regroup."

@anneapplebaum It's an incredible suggestion, isn't it? Should they be expected to trade children for peace as well? Surely even the subject of negotiations can't raised before every single kidnapped child is returned unharmed.

'Kin 'ell. There are more dramatic stories in this incredible thread, but for some reason this is the one that made me tear up.

@RickiTarr In the late 1970's, I drove a taxi part-time in the American south as a way of working my way through university. I was happy to pick up black people and take them to their destinations. As a young, long-haired, white, university student, carrying black passengers in the back of my taxi, the police would frequently pull me over, make me get out of the taxi, and walk away from the vehicle (out of ear-shot of my passengers) and question me as to whether my passengers were threatening me in any way. "No sir, officer. Everything's fine." Then I was allowed to proceed.

I remember one night I picked up a very glamourous young black couple. The young lady looked like a movie star in a red ball gown. The gentleman looked like Marvin Gaye in a tuxedo. We were having a great conversation. The police stopped my taxi. After a few minutes of the usual questioning, they let us proceed.

When I got back in the taxi, I looked at them and quietly said "I'm sorry." There was a pause. They looked at me and the gentleman said quietly: "It's okay". We drove on.

My life changed at that moment.

Norfolk Southern, the company whose train derailed in Ohio and unleashed chemicals, made a record $12 billion in revenue last year.

Instead of investing in better safety measures, what did the company do? It authorized a $10 billion stock buyback.

Corporate greed, folks.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
When will you notice
That second line's not true

I've been using a Macbook Air for something like a decade, usually with the camera covered with an @eff privacy sticker:

It's taken me this long to realize it was interfering with the ambient light sensor, sitting there almost invisibly about 1/4" away from the camera and to move it.

I remember this well.

How pessimism about renewables was proved wrong.

Incumbent German electricity suppliers said in 1993 that renewables could never provide more than 4% of electricity.

In 2022 50% of German electricity was from renewables, mainly wind and solar.
