@jbenjamint @ottocrat I somehow remember every one of those vaguely plaid-ish polyester shirts. OTOH I actually do still own a couple of my 1980s ties, suitable for a Buckaroo Banzai closing credits walk.
@ottocrat Good lord, I have that exact class picture, haircut and shirt.
@unclepj @SLICEOFHOME Quite. I too celebrate effective law enforcement against predators, but it benefits no-one to instantly exploit it to push your favorite narrative.
@davidbruchmann @SLICEOFHOME Arrests are a matter of public record, and if you think about it, in a free society, they have to be. But yes, publishing them in the paper does put the innocent -- and every principle says that we must assume some could be -- at great risk.
I'm more concerned that the poster has characterized the politics and church affiliations of some without any supporting documentation. It has a certain smell of attention-seeking fabrication.
@enmodo @RitchieTorres A bit late with this reply, but I don''t share your confidence that many more republicans would do the right thing if they weren't seen doing it. They liked having Trump in power; they liked his coattails.
@SLICEOFHOME The information about their church and political affiliations (and, *snort*, whether or not they're drag queens) isn't in the linked article. Do you have another link for that?)
They continually deflect to a false -- or at least irrelevant -- dichotomy of "left" vs. "right". But DeSantis et al share this with the likes of Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot as well: they didn't like people knowing things either. No tyrant or totalitarian will tolerate an alternative narrative to the one they're spinning. This also goes for Adolf H. and pretty much every theocracy ever.
@kpgraham @JohnShirley2023 Microsoft trains a system on all the crazy there is: world startled when it seems crazy.
@mikegalsworthy Apparently the overwhelming majority of MEPs they empaneled were UKIP, and all were pro brexit. Not one pro-EU MEP was ever invited.
@transdiffusion Don't let these fuckers anywhere near the Kool-Aid pitcher
(The font I chose is "Seravek". One way or another it seems to be available in Apple Books under MacOS Big Sur. It fits the prose and setting beautifully)
I'm reading the original serialized version of A E Van Vogt's "The Weapon Makers" for the first time. Very different from the version he published as a novel. Absolutely transporting. There's something about that 1940s-50s view of the far future that's indescribably captivating. I even switched to a rather blunt sans-serif font that gives it even more of a midcentury feel.
@JohnShirley2023 @DavidMHarlan
Of course eventually you get past "dated" and back into something wonderful. Most of Poul Anderson and Larry Niven feel dated to me. But Bester and Van Vogt and Eric Frank Russell just feel fresher and newer than ever.
