@ct_bergstrom It you've recently rewatched 2001: A Space Odyssey, this is downright creepy. It sounds not a little like the BBC-12 interview near the beginning of the Discovery act as HAL describes how fulfilling his job is. HAL is far less unctuous and doesn't belabor an emotional angle but the tone is close.

Over on that other site, such personages as Brendan O'Neill, Toby Young and Julia Hartley-Brewer are excoriating the Met for the Coronation arrests.

Stopped clocks and all that; the authoritarian Right really has no friends today.

@BashStKid Of course we have to remember that Boris Johnson said that “part-Kenyan” heritage had driven Barack Obama towards anti-British sentiment, so you know what they'll quietly say to themselves about this.

I couldn't get ANY "respected" scientific journal to publish my magnum opus "We Shouldn't Fart In Elevators". Clearly, they're all elevator-farters or why would they reject it?

Bucatini should be extra-long as well, so you can have it with really big meatballs and then feel like a little kid again when you eat it.

Just a reminder, the last time a king of England was the Third of his name, we declared Independence and gave atomic wedgies to a lot of redcoats.

Blocked, as much for the cutesy wink as the bog-standard "guns don't kill people ..." take.

i just replied to someone who helpfully pointed out the population difference, something he imagines everyone else missed. "Now divide zero by the same factor and see what you get."

I don't know why I put out a bowl of water for the cat with his breakfast when he just takes ten bites then walks over to the bucket under the neighbor's downspout for a drink anyway.

Fomalhaut Debris Disk would be an outstanding name for an ephemeral late 60s prog rock band or a modern ambient electronica artist.

When I was in my mid-teens (yes I'm that old) there was a moment when this song was so popular that it'd often be playing, out of sync obviously, on more than one station at once, even in our fairly small market. So if we were out cruising, we'd had this little game where you had to quickly punch up the other station it was playing on in order to avoid hearing the words "Shadow Dancing". I think this is the first time I've thought of that ...

Hell and damnation, I never knew. My mother smoked Kents for my whole childhood and presumably before. Sounds like they stopped years before she would have started smoking but I'm amazed I hadn't heard this.

It's beyond belief: even as far back as the 1910s there was reason to believe asbestos particle inhalation was dangerous. It's like leaded gas -- they continued to do it for years after the harms were known, because profit.

(There's a bunch of these, amusingly at Stanford given one of their recent pratfalls. Several of them would served just about as well.) tobacco.stanford.edu/cigarette

It was Thursday night and we were chilling on the intellectual dark web. Jordan was torrenting the James Watson bootleg that just dropped. Pinker was like “You know what doesn’t matter in science anymore?” Cowen guessed “GRE scores?” but no and Lindsay said “the art of the blade?” and everyone was all wait how the fuck did he get back in here and by the time that got sorted it was bedtime but when Pinker dropped a truth bomb “merit” we knew there would be no sleep to be has for us that night.

Russian terrorists carry out mass looting under the guise of "evacuating civilians."

Employees of the occupation regime (a mix of Ukrainian traitors and Russian Federation denizens) are fleeing Mykhaylivka and Dniprorudne in Zaporizhzhya region – stealing everything as they go.

The occupiers and “people's militia" are stealing cars and looting stores with office equipment.
