@bruces Is one officially past it if one doesn't readily apprehend the thematic union of a pencil, ray-bans and kentucky bourbon?

CW: Sexual harassment in STEM

Re-posting this 🐤 thread from 2018 which, sadly, is still relevant:

#WomenInSTEM who talk about #harassment and sexual misconduct get a lot of antagonistic & unhelpful replies.
@shrewshrew and I (a woman & a man in science) tried to categorize them. #9ReplyGuys

THE NINE TYPES OF REPLY GUYS 🧵

#1: THE LIFE COACH

@chewie @TerribleMaps The Baltic is a lake as well. And Australia seems to be missing a gulf...

The classic case of this was that several public houses in #lancashire reacted to attempts to import segregation by putting up signs that they would serve black G.I.s only!

In WW2, the movement of millions of American troops to Britain, known as the “friendly invasion,” brought to light stark differences concerning racial segregation. Many Britons struggled to understand or accept the institutionalized discrimination that Black soldiers faced in White America, leading to tensions between the two allied nations on the matter of civil rights.

On July 15, 1944, in Bristol England, the "Park Street Riot" occurred as 400 Black soldiers confronted 120 MPs over pub access. Observers later recounted that locals rooted for the Black troops. Like the Battle of Bamber Bridge a year earlier, this event underscored the racism Black troops faced as well as the disconnect between how they were treated overseas vs in their own country.

climate change

@sundogplanets @not2b

The article seems (conscientiously) inconclusive. The examples they give are related to monsoons and aquifer depletion, which basically refer to quantities of water borne on the land, amounts which must be some several orders of magnitude smaller than oceans rapidly taking on the burden what formerly was miles-deep ice covering continental sized areas.

I make no claims; I am as I said incompetent to make them. But I have often thought about it.

climate change

@not2b @sundogplanets One thing that not many people seem to want to think about is that melting polar ice and rising seas shifts the tectonic load. I'm neither a seismologist nor geologist but it seems reasonable to expect increase in earthquakes and perhaps vulcanism at the boundaries.

BREAKING: Fury in Mississippi at the suggestion it's as impoverished and poorly governed as Britain

I wish I could get enthusiastic about nuclear energy, because "Fissile, not Fossil" is a great slogan.

@alpuzz If it was a cat rather than a dog, its judgement wold probably be better but a lot of people would be locked out or at least have to wait a long time because cats have to come to you. Calling them accomplishes very little and is downright counterproductive most of the time.

Wow... A German court refuses extradition to the UK, after asking about "chronic overcrowding, staff shortages, violence among inmates", only receiving a vague, last-minute email frok a police station in Manchester about "creating an extra 20,000 prison places", and then being ignored.

@arstechnica One day we'll find it piled into an asteroid, and its dashcam video of weaving drunkenly all over the solar system will end up on YouTube.

@2du @arstechnica If it's the dumbest Ars article you've ever read you've been selective or lucky. That said, it is indeed f---ing horrible and made me a) glad of my adblocker so they didn't get paid for my click, and b) hopeful I don't encounter the author again.

@matthewmuses @arstechnica

I did it for reasons of biosphere and habitat protection, reduction of unnecessary suffering. I don't think consuming animal products is inevitably unhealty in moderation. And I'm very interested in the possibilities that "lab-grown" food represents.
