The overwhelming majority of the resources approved as security assistance for #Ukraine has... gone directly to #American #manufacturers, supporting American #jobs, expanding the American industrial base, and producing new weapons for America’s military — Sen Mitch McConnell #quote #quotes #SupportUkraine

@elizatech I note he doesn't actually address the citations and quotes in the article, just "with my many properties it's never happened to me" or, hilariously, "those of any of my many skyscraper-leasing investors". What are the odds, do you suppose, that he actually phoned his *many* skyscraper-leasing investors to ask before starting his reply sequence?

@jaykuo I've never even heard an explanation of why they think Israel even needs additional funding. Nothing about the situation they find themselves in re Hamas and Gaza is a result of Israel not having sufficient military funds.

There is a real Catch-22 at work in the tech media rhetoric I’m seeing around ‘incumbent’ responses to new AI regulation: If you are an incumbent that resists new regulation, you’re arrogantly setting yourself above sovereigns. If you are an incumbent who accepts new regulation, you’re trying to entrench your power and block new entrants.

I got almost halfway through "The Expanse" before realizing it wasn't about mutant undergarments nor spelled "The X-Pants"

@Moira Apologies in advance for weighing in on a detail that's trivial in the overall scheme of things, but it's nice to see them use "dilemma" correctly.

@bruces I've just been knocked over by this page from their site.

"Dovevi solo far saltare quelle maledette porte!"

@JasonPerseus Yeah, I'm baffle by that bit as well. Is Israel unable to defend itself against Hamas in any way that US assistance would fix?

@knittingknots2 Russia's kleptocracy has a lot of practice at impoverishing Russians without our help. So they make sure the pain of sanctions is felt well below their level.

@markarayner One suspects the reason that the dot matrix printer isn't getting more love in the replies is the shrinking number of people who remember them.

@bruces Also presumes that the votes of those who aren't voting would do more good than harm. One suspects in real life they'd be among the most easily captured by demagogues.

@pieist I feel sure a contemporary Adams would have crewed the B Ark with cryptobros and LLM nuisances.

You can just see the nft folks voting to burn down all the forests …

@BashStKid "If you're so clever you tell us what colour it should be!" The man was truly ahead of his time.

29 October.
The Internet's Birthday: first computer-to-computer link established on ARPANET, 1969; it remains a useless curiosity until Dawkins coins 'meme' in 1976, making cat memes possible. By 2000 search engine optimisers outnumber telephone santisers; 'B' Ark redesign efforts ensue.

@StefanEJones @bruces This is where the big box o' useless stuff and rudimentary wire stripping and splicing skills come in handy. More than once I've made the thing I need using the wall wart from one forgotten product and the connector from another. Just mind the polarity.

@simulo @rwg I've recently -- on a small personal scale -- taken back my online presence and moved my web and email servers onto devices that I control. One thing I became instantly aware of is what a shitstorm the internet is now. The moment it came up the attacks began, in immense volume. My firewall's blackhole list already covers about 1/8th of the entire IPv4 address space. Perhaps universities just don't want or cant staff the exposure to risk and are happy to outsource to people who are paid to do that sort of thing.

Does this book exist?

"How Universities Lost the Internet"

or has someone done research on this topic? That is, the fact that on many North American universities have ceded all technical capacity to Microsoft, Google, etc?

It used to be students could get web hosting, email, and even some cool experimental online stuff through their schools. Now every online communication channel is locked down.
