Also yeah, it's cute! But also this mouse is not cleaning. Mice (and rats) hoard stuff! They just do. And this behavior can be useful for historians and archaeologists! You see a lot of the "it's not going to happen" kind of wishful thinking, but seldom on that sort of scale. Usually it's just individuals who want to do something stupid, and through magical thinking believe that simply saying it's okay will make it true.
That a broad swathe of an entire first-world nation's white collar segment has now spent years acting that way without ever checking itself is mindblowing.
@brianklaas I think they should make some of them out of Slow Glass. It'd be interesting to log on to the 1996 Internet again.
@simonbp The idea that raliroads and google exist in the same universe is news to me. Whenever I take the train to the SF bay area I get off at Oakland. Beyond that, Here Be Dragons.

From 2015 to 2022, I spent hundreds of hours on Duolingo, translating articles, answering language questions on the forums, and helping to improve the smaller courses by reporting mistakes.
There are thousands of volunteers who donated their labour to Duo: the course creators who wrote their courses, the volunteers who created grammar guides (some smaller languages had an entire second course in the forums), the wiki contributors, the native speakers who answered questions in the sentence discussions.
All of their work made Duolingo the powerhouse it is today. Duo was built by a community who believed in its original mission: language learning should be free and accessible.
Bit by bit all of our work was hidden from us as Duolingo became a publicly-traded company. And now that work is being fed into their AI as training data.
Well, I've learned the true lesson of Duolingo: never give a corporation your labour for free. Don't ever trust them, no matter what they say. Eventually greed will consume any good intentions.

@memes I'm not sure that's true. Perhaps sometimes but I suspect fines and/or picking up trash for a few weekends are the most you can typically expect.
