@pipistrelle @JohnShirley2023 Five years later and I still can't get my head around it. I thought they were gnawing through the bottom of the barrel when they elected Dubya. But it turned out they could not only do worse than a genuinely valueless human being, they could do far, far worse.

I think it's terribly wrong that we're seizing Russian oligarchs' yachts without recompense. If we had any compassion at all we'd compensate them with one of the things they've shown they'll do anything for: a washing machne, or a jar of Nutella.

Driver only operation on trains cannot be allowed to go ahead.

I was attacked on a train platform as my train pulled in when I was 17, I was terrified and ran on to my train and down the train towards the guard as the train pulled out of the station. They saw the attack happen and where coming to meet me. They sat with me the whole journey home and comforted me. I don't know what I would have done without their support. Thank you #RMT for striking, for us and for you! ✊✊

@donsbot @cstross It's pretty breezy there. Some big windmills would do a brisk business in the furious 50s if you could find a place to put them.

@cstross If you put photovoltaic collectors around the golden turd you'll get twice the sunlight.

@DetersHenning And the result will be people whose output you already see boosted every day. I've actually unfollowed people for the simple reason that the other people I follow boost (retweet) everything they post.

@hyperplanes The thing is if you buy a mastodon server, the only thing you've bought is its users. The software is free and you're still still on the hook for hosting and bandwidth charges. So you have to wonder what "mastodon.cloud" users think of being bought. Assuming they even know it.

@JohnShirley2023 Tom Lehrer once said that satire died when Henry Kissinger was given a Nobel Peace Prize.

Perhaps someone can complete the sentence "Dystopian science fiction died when [...]"

@rubenbolling @boingboing Makes one think of a classic Star Trek style plot in which laughing at Musk causes the Neuralink implant to short out and free you.

@1br0wn That's a lot of words to say "we decrypt your communications en route, but, um, we don't read them **ourselves**."

@JanPV I heard that this morning: terribly earnest health minister advising people to "avoid risky activities". As if most ambulances are called on behalf of daredevils juggling chainsaws and not at-risk older people taking a fall in the home or having respiratory or cardiac problems after climbing their front steps.

@mathver It was so lazily implemented -- probably due to so many competent staff having been fired -- that it mattered where the link was. My twitter profile had a link to my mastodon profile (which was at mastodon.social, so it was readily detectible) in the dedicated "Website" field. Even when all this was going on, clicking it never took you to the warning interstitial page.

@rubenbolling If that guy isn't Steven Seagal he's someone who aspires to be Steven Seagal. Good to know once again Twitter's in such discerning hands.

@medigoth I've known a lot of people who seem to think that a doctorate is basically to a master's what a master's is to a bachelor's: just the next rung up. It seems to be the default position even for professionals who haven't had a lot of exposure to doctoral programs or anyone in one. It's really hard to explain to them the extent to which the difference is qualitative.

@ketchup71 @rahmstorf Sounds neither shoddy nor too late: the ability to extemporize an essay on the spot means he knew the material thoroughly. It's like a primary school equivalent of a Viva Voce; what you do to defend a graduate-level or better thesis.
