"The solution is simple – building networks of safe, segregated cycle routes in towns and cities across the #UK would turn #cycling into a genuine option for millions of people, helping them break out of car dependence and the huge costs associated with that.”
@ali
Yes. One of the most insidious "truism" that people take as read is that a public good must be profitable, or at least "pay for itself" in some direct way. This is nonsense. (And deep down people know it: for one thing, it's not a test anyone applies to the fire department, police or military.)
Britain's unprecedented Industrial Revolution was made possible by a huge investment in transportation infrastructure, particularly canals and railways. It "paid for itself" not with ticket sales but by empowering industry and prosperity at all levels of society, throughout the countryside.
@lauren Never heard that term before but let me tell you why you're wrong...
@ali Something something Beeching Axe as well...
@HSTG Thank you for the benefit of your culinary experience, which is apparently disturbingly eclectic.
@ChamomileHangover Pretty sure they're the same stuff as everything else Necco makes, notably candy hearts. Tempted to open it to see if they really look like little 3.5" floppies or if the art is taking liberties.
@JohnShirley2023 The protestors are wearing American right wing gear like sheriff badges and wrapping themselves in US flags. Just in case anyone doubts their inspiration.
(From beacon of democracy to beacon of antidemocracy in one presidential term. Fast work on our part.)
@lauren (But to me Ian Ogilvy will always be The School Bully to Michael Palin's Tompkinson.)
@lauren "I Spy" got a lot of credit for its international settings, but it was mostly fakery like this; only really travelling for a few high-profile episodes; first and last of the season sort of thing.
The Return of the Saint, which I like a lot more than I should considering the weak writing, really was filmed all over Europe. The bigger challenge was keeping that beautiful early Jaguar XJS running.
@lauren (Actually that's unfair, it constantly used exotic locations ... within an hour's drive of LA.)
@lauren Leslie Stevens also created "Search", a wheel series and one of my favorites. Considering that world travel was essential to the show's theme I don't imagine (let alone recall) they ever did a bottle episode. Though they were certainly guilty of the common technique of using stale stock footage to establish a scene in some far-flung city, and then doing everything else on the studio lot.
@lauren I get this sort of problem on my Raspberry Pi Zero:
$ echo $((2+2))
4
$ echo $((447*261))
116667
echo "scale=∞; sqrt(2)" | bc
** Computer unable to calculate beyond this point due to overheating
@lauren Since the films include so many scavengers and junk dealers, what about a SW-universe comedy series patterned on Sanford and Son?
I'm delighted to find that #LXC and #LXD now work effortlessly and flawlessly out of the box in the current #AlpineLinux, v. 3.17.
Even launching unprivileged containers as a non-root user works without error and with minimal configuration effort.
As nearly as I can tell, this makes Alpine the only linux distro other than Ubuntu that this is true of. And it does it with its standard repositories, none of your snaps nonsense. Nice to finally have an ultra-lightweight, systemd-free distro for hosting Linux #Containers.
Verification issues: Mastodon vs Birdsite
@urbandata @anildash @adamdavidson
It does suppose that everyone is clear on what constitutes an official site.
For example, the domain clarencethomas.net is devoted to criticism of Clarence Thomas, and was certainly not registered by him. The person who operates that site could use it to create an "official" Mastodon presence for Clarence Thomas. Which would be fine by me but you see what I'm getting at.
