@RollingStone Hey, who doesn't want to be the guy who battles in the street to defend a [claimed] billionaire's pornstar adultery payoffs?

@ct_bergstrom Neal Stephenson predicted this too: read his discussion of "bogons" in Anathem.

@JimMaruschak @lednabm @jperlow @MarkRuffalo

Yeah, fascinating made-up objection that has nothing to do with the actual economics in countries that have actually tried investing in nuclear.

@jperlow @MarkRuffalo

Oh look, here comes that guy. He always shows up. And he's always wrong, because his hypothetical data set doesn't correspond in any way to what happens in the real world:

None of the lies, the malfeasance, the self-dealing, the corrupt cronyism... only, finally, a particularly naked instance of "I am actually better than you" conduct that was blatant and symbolic enough to strike home.

Funny the thing that finally stuck to Boris Johnson after all these years is The Great British "Oi, So You Think You're Better Than Us?"

Considering that's exactly what he has always thought and has never made any effort to hide beyond mussing his hair.

@FinalOverdrive @mmasnick

I think for example, the clause "how easy is it to express sexually online" hides a lot of real-world complexity regarding ideological trends which can be powerfully countervailing in some particulars. In other words, some forms of sexual expression, and responses to them, can at various times be as powerfully suppressed as others are liberated, depending on whose agenda is being served.

@FinalOverdrive @mmasnick Right, but "feels broadly true" in some people's hands too easily becomes "handy yardstick that's always right".

@FinalOverdrive @mmasnick That's a very thought provoking observation. Though I suspect it would be easy to overstate the breadth and consistency of its applicability.

@rudytheelder Reminds me a bit of when Craiyon and similar renderers produce imitations of posters with text... it has the sense of what words look like but not the knowledge that they convey meaning or how. Taggers might be coming from the same cognitive space.

... hang on, there are some mysterious new charges on my credit card. Several of them mention cheese trays and room service.

Well, I caught him a few days ago. Had to do the same trick of herding him into a humane trap that he won't go into voluntarily.

Took him to an overgrown area near the Columbia river,; hopefully he'll find his way to some sort of survivable habitat. If nothing else there's a hotel nearby...

@FLGLchicago
Fun fact; the COVID death rate in the US currently is twice the opioid death rate
But one is "over" and the other is a crisis and an epidemic

I don't know about you but I genuinely feel that the little glass hut on top of the Pontiff's touring float should be called the Pope-A-Cabana

@JohnShirley2023 This subject always makes me think of Lindsay Anderson's "Britannia Hospital", and Malcolm McDowall's fate in it.
