@MaryAliciaZiff @JamesGleick Tom Lehrer famously said "... satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger received the Nobel Peace Prize." Since that day, it's been pretty much impossible to parody the Republicans.

@carlysagan @petergleick
Interesting question. I wonder if he participated in things like Compuserve, The Well, or Usenet prior to Eternal September (generally considered to have been in roughly the middle of the 1990s). I imagine he'd have thought well of its potential but in an awful way I'm sort of glad he missed its fruition. (If what we have now can be called that. And who knows... maybe this is just a dark patch and it's still early days.)

@petergleick @carlysagan
It's worse than that; now to even ask a question is an admission of weakness, and to invite a veritable Dunning-Kruger Effect festival of imaginary answers from self-nominated authorities. Social media is entirely about making statements... woe betide the person who asks a question.

@The_T VMWare makes this a lot simpler. I maintain a Windows 95 VM for some long-abandoned, irreplaceable applications that can't run on anything else. I can instantiate it on any Mac or Linux (desktop) PC at any time.

@somafm That should come with a card warning of the perils of being a little too cool.

@brianstorms @brianklaas Anything by Lalo Schifrin, really. Some of his themes were probably responsible for keeping their shows on the air years after they jumped the shark, just because they got you thinking you were really going to enjoy what followed.

@brianklaas
... But perhaps the most ridiculously mismatched theme-to-show awesomeness ratio... was... wait for it... Medical Center.

@randahl I wonder if she's done enough homework on him to know he doesn't pay his bills? Bad enough to lose, worse to be a national joke, but to get stiffed for it in the end, that's the punch line.

@ottocrat Britain is a shop owner who locks the door and puts a "FUCK OFF" sign in the window, then spends the rest of his life bitterly and creatively apportioning blame for his loss of trade.

@msbellows @Ruth_Mottram @Doug_Bostrom

wouldja believe, no hydrological engineering degree! Jus' natcheral talent, I tells ya

They could come in handy if the Netherlands were still draining land.

1. Put a lock on the bay.
2. Let a cruise ship in through the lock. Cruise ship displaces water, which is forced out into the ocean. Close the lock.
3. Dismantle the cruise ship and make stuff out of it. Put the passengers to work building seawalls.
4. GOTO 2

@Ruth_Mottram (Sorry, I deleted my reply when I realized you'd already said it better in your linked post.)

@JamesGleick @NPR It is an interesting question, though. When is it acceptable to expose the private life of a public person? The article touches on one example -- "outing" a prominent figure known for their hostility and opposition to gay rights -- which might be deemed ethical, though there is no evidence that it applies here. Other than profound hypocrisy on this level, it's hard to see a case for it.

@morgfair Well, obviously that's because he didn't leave office, he was re-elected in a landslide. He's just taking some well-earned golf weeks, here in the second term of his perfect presidency. I mean, duh.
