@ct_bergstrom
No, I definitely wasn't responding to you, but to the intervening comment from someone else about a "foundational belief of evolution".

@EugeneMcParland I've seen -- recently -- publicity video of "Putin" meeting a front-line general, who showed him no deference, and there was no precedence observed and who carried himself like, frankly, a bemused, none-too-intelligent person pulled from the general population, given minor plastic surgery and thrust into a play-acting role.

@fifilamoura @ct_bergstrom

No serious evolutionary biologist thinks that life is only about fucking and reproduction. Nature is replete with species the majority of whose members do not contribute to the gene pool yet very much contribute to the survival of the genome.

@sundogplanets @planet4589 There's an alternate universe in which after Apollo 11 we pressed on to Mars, the Belt, Jupiter's moons. I'd like to live in that universe. Instead for mission after mission we hit golf balls and drove dune buggies accompanied by radio chatter that consisted of "Now I'm going to go and look at the shadow on the other side of that rock"*. Until everyone said "what in hell is any of this for, anyway?"

*I've listened to it. It really is like that.

@Miriamm I've always wanted to print up shelf tags with made-up vaguely Scandinavian-looking words on them and just add them to the shelves below products at random

Today marks the 86th anniversary of the #Sandarmokh massacre, a tragic event where over a thousand people, including prominent Ukrainian writers, poets, artists, scientists, and others, were ruthlessly executed by Soviet authorities in the pine forest in northern russia (karelia) on an autumn day.

Known as the “Executed Renaissance” in #Ukraine,

For decades, the Soviet Union concealed this crime, only revealing the truth in 1997

@bruces Pretty sure when they do come they'll hover over the South SF Bay and Seattle, not DC as always depicted.

@gnaddrig If the site admins learn that other instances will block them if they're too advertiser-friendly, they'll stop being advertiser-friendly. "mastodon.social" is a big one that nobody's going to be in a hurry to block, but it'd be nice to put some pressure on.

@umopapisdnpuaq @eclectech

I was amused when I went to the MIT Technology Review site and instantly got 3 simultaneous popups of different types for unrelated purposes. Hey MIT, have you considered reviewing the technology you're using on your technology review website?

@eclectech I use Privacy Badger and Vanilla Cookie Manager on top of uBlock Origin. They're not going to track me very well or for very long.

I genuinely have no idea why people just accept the idea that Israel needs military aid to respond to the Hamas attacks. Is there any evidence whatsoever that 's problem is a consequence of, or in any way constraind by inadequate military capability and funding?

@petersuber
@AnnemarieBridy
📎 "It looks like you're trying to talk to a patient. Would you like me to inject some platitudes?"

@petersuber Now if only they weren't trained on a corpus of internet antivaxxer ravings.

@synkr3tyk @ct_bergstrom Conversely, maybe they're compiling them instantly, but sending them ten minutes into the future to do it.

@LouisIngenthron Boosts by others you follow is a bit slower but a lot more reliable and you don't have to sift quite so much chaff. You get there in the end.

I've given up and unfollowed all the common hashtags like (leaving out the # symbol) Ukraine, EU, Brexit....

Following them simply fills your timeline with hashtag-packers and the signal:noise ratio is terrible. Best to stick to following individual accounts.

@w7voa Imagine if they actually asked the American people if they wanted "greater integration" with Saudi Arabia. 9/11 complicity, cutting up Jamal Khashoggi alive in their embassy, beheading women for adultery; yeah, they totally share American values.
