crypto nonsense: TL;DR: Let's expand the decentralized web without building a crypto wall around it. #nerdery #blog #crypto
In comments on HackerNews, yet another devoted cryptobro* was trying to make the case that a bet against a crypto-monetized "web3" is a bet in favor of "the current centralized western oligopolies," which is certainly one wrong way to think about everything. Like many such devotees, he kept conflating a decentralized web with crypto.
I'm all for decentralizing the web. Let's expand the decentralized web without building a crypto wall around it.
* I feel reasonably confident in the label "cryptobro" given this comment: "my dude, do you always evaluate things for what they are rather than what they could be?"

@pwinn crypto isn't bad per se and there are some examples out there where it was implemented well like #Odysee. There anyone can still view the content, though if you choose to donate, then crypto authentication is needed. Of course you get some benefits if you have an account.
The biggest issue I have with the crypto hype is that people like add a monetary value to their token or coin. If we could leave that way of thinking, the technology could have more potential.
