@Jaden2@mstdn.social I was told this as a white kid learning to drive, and told my own kids the same. But the emphasis was on maybe getting out of a ticket, and avoiding a cop having a bad day, never on a potential for violence.
I told my kids it would be even more important if anyone in the car wasn’t white, though.
@pwinn @Jaden2 Same. I grew up poor as a white kid. We were given the same instructions, hands on the wheel etc, but it was to avoid a ticket or avoid compounding a ticket with nit-picky stuff. I was never given the impression that my life was at stake. I was never given the impression that the cop wouldn't recognize my humanity. Unfortunately, this is not everyone's reality.
