I shudder to think of the moderation on a NYTimes-run Mastodon server, if it's anything like their op-ed pages.
This is why I'm wary of newsrooms standing up their own instances.
@alexwild The options for any news org seem to be:
1. Ignore the fediverse
2. Use an existing server
3. Run their own server
1 won’t and shouldn’t happen, unless the fediverse deliberately pursues irrelevance, and I think that ship is sailing.
2 is like newsrooms having all of their reporters sign up for Hotmail or Gmail or Yahoo email addresses. They won’t, and we wouldn’t want the extra effort involved to block them all.
3 is the only thing that makes sense, and it makes it easy to block entire publications at the server level, so win-win!
@alexwild Absolutely! I have had a work email address at every company I’ve ever been paid a salary. Of course, I also have a personal email address or three.
@pwinn @alexwild That exactly! Anyone who is confused by this idea is forgetting that that’s exactly how email works (and has always worked). And how Usenet worked in the day, which is probably an even better example - sites had an incentive to keep their users in line because if they caused enough trouble the whole site risked getting blocked en masse by other sites.
@pwinn Should most places of employment run their own servers, though? I'm not sure that's in the interest of the workers.
