@jaredwhite I 100% agree, despite the claims made by two persistent commenters in response to this post. They’re unconvincing to me. An on-demand audio show I’m forced to use a particular app to listen to is not a podcast. Spotify can call those shows whatever they want, that doesn’t make their labels true. If their co-opting of a popular label fools some in the press, that’s sad. We have so many examples of that in every area of life, it shouldn’t be hard to understand that this is another one.
This is one of the most disappointing things Apple has done, from where I sit. Just terrible behavior from a company that should know better.
The Space Needle appears to be taking off from the fog in Seattle, Washington with Mt Rainier on the horizon:

This is real talk, with McSweeney’s saying what the folks responsible for laying off tens of thousands of people won’t.
So far, Apple has chosen to cut Tim Cook’s pay rather than engage in mass layoffs. So far, the company I work for has avoided mass layoffs, too. In fact, they acquired yet another small company, but that’s another argument for another day.
@atomicpoet This sounds amazing, and I can't wait to see larger-scale tests and sign up!
@Rbratspies The mind, it boggles.
@maxkennerly What is the point of life advice from young people? Even before he claimed to have quit Goldman Sachs after 15 months of 17-hour days, he had no way of knowing whether his try-hard approach to work would result in anything other than a mediocre career.
It's possible that successful and happy older people will have forgotten what they went through to get there, or that the world has changed enough that their memories are no longer applicable, but there's a better chance of wisdom from those who've lived closer to a full life than someone just starting out.
@tewha Overcast is pretty great for an alternative.
@braindouche There's clearly *some* pro-Chinese "propaganda" in the book series. After all, Liu Cixin had to include a three-quarter-page footnote in the English translation of one of the books to explain that when he said that the Chinese group learned faster because of the density of their pictographic language, he was referring to an imaginary future pictographic language, not the current system of Kanji which communicates information at the same average density as western languages. He had gotten a *lot* of pushback. That footnote sent me down a rabbit hole that was fascinating!
Anyway, I don't think the books are any more propaganda than any western equivalent, and for the same reasons: we don't realize we're reflecting our pro-western bias any more than I think he did.
The shows, though, TenCent sure knows which side of the bao holds the filling! 😀
@valthonis another way to think about it is that since none of us have one, we are all waiting for it.
I don’t know anyone actively anticipating it though.
@oliphant the audience of Go Devs who are going to appreciate this thread is probably tiny, but as one, I love it!
@dimillian A step in the right direction is still good. I'm digging things so far, I'm confident you'll do something good.
@dimillian This seems like it will be a big help. Right now the thing that drives me most crazy about mastodon generally is when my "direct messages" are mixed in with timelines. I have to triple-check every time to make sure I didn't accidentally post something publicly.
I *never* want to see direct messages in my Home timeline. I can't imagine anyone every wanting to.
Having messages look like conversations seems like a great boon to avoid panic. 😀

Since I don't want to actually publicly engage with Matt Yglesias or his fellow subscribers, and I keep talking myself out of my one-to-five rating system, it turns out what I do instead is discuss some of his articles at length with one of my brothers, where one of us takes the pro and the other takes the con on a given issue until we find common ground.
That way you don't have to read the whole conversations that end with one of us saying things like "I would *love* to live in a world where housing permits were like gun permits: shall-issue rather than may-issue."
Blue Ghost fireflies have a delicate blue glow and their lights don’t blink. They hover 1-2 ft from the forest floor giving the impression the forest is full of gently floating fairies. They are only out 2 weeks a year in limited locations in the southeast US and it must be completely dark. No image will ever capture what it’s like to stand in a forest full of fairies. 💜🧚🏻
