@nataliedavisgdread If it's truly a balloon, with no means of propulsion, why are people acting as if there was any choice about where it goes? It's at the mercy of wind currents, is it not?
"Local" social media, whether Facebook or NextDoor, is the worst of all possible media.
With non-local media, you might be able to convince yourself that the unhinged racist sexist homophobic people who hate the poor are at least people you don't have to interact with on a regular basis. You can stop loading the page or app and retreat into the warm embrace of the kind-hearted people you interact with in the real world.
With local media, you are forced to confront the reality: it is your neighbors, people who live near you, who are hateful. When you are putting out the trash bin on trash day, and wave to your neighbor, they're the one calling the police because someone "undesirable" was walking down the street minding their own business.
Maybe it would be better to know, except what are you going to do with that information? It's not like anywhere else is any better!
The only way to win the game is not to play.
It's the First Friday of February, a Fantastic time For Following Fine Folks. The mastodon experience is better when you Follow more people, and these are some people who are worth Following:
@nataliedavisgdread Natalie Davis
@kyra_davis Kyra Davis
@dtgeek Anthony Dean
@funcrunch Pax Ahimsa Gethen
@midnightcommander@linuxrocks.online midnightcommander
I've interacted with Natalie Davis for many years on several different platforms, so I can promise you: she's the real deal!
Here is the original inventor of rock and roll—and the steel guitar. Sister Rosetta Thorpe doesn’t get the credit—and she really should. Many of the rock and roll “inventors” need to pay their respects to her. Little Richard and Chuck Berry others owe a great deal to her. 🙏🏿

Happy Black Friday!
I try to spend some time every Friday boosting posts of music videos by Black artists. I'm not Black myself, so I'm taking a chance today by posting my own. I hope it's okay to participate in the hashtag!
Summertime, by Lena Horne
https://youtu.be/EIHPHMUZoq0
Lena Horne was an amazing woman. Not just a singer, she was a very popular actress who wouldn't take roles she thought typecast her. She was a civil rights activist, and participated in protests and marches. She also sued clubs that wouldn't let her perform, and ended up blacklisted during the McCarthyism of the 1940s because of her leftist progressive views.
This song makes me wistful for relief from the ice currently blanketing my city. This video is from:
Black History Music Playlist

The playlist starts with 85 great videos in alphabetical order by first name, adds 9 more videos in no particular order, and ends on a 15-minute tech product review for reasons unclear to me.

The next time you use any navigation device, software or Google Maps thank Dr. Gladys West. Her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of Earth, and her work on the development of the satellite models that were eventually incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. #BlackMastodon #BlackHistoryMonth
@cstross It's amazing to watch. I mean, we can't be sure yet, but I sure wouldn't bet against your first guess!
@Pat It takes a bigger brain than mine to understand that, despite Dr King and Malcom X being murdered with guns, guns were somehow essential to civil rights. Perhaps it's true, in the sense that King's murder with a gun led to LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act of 1968, in part to stem the protests that erupted afterward.
Guns have been used against civil rights protestors over and over and over again, and used by civil rights protestors almost never. This practical history of what has actually happened seems more helpful than your counterfactual assertion that guns are equal to freedom. That is plainly not true.
In a country awash with guns, my daughter doesn't have the freedom to use a locker at school, and I don't have the freedom of feeling certain that she won't be shot at school. In this ridiculous hellscape of a country awash with guns, we've had 55 mass shootings in the 33 days of 2023.

The history is clear, the results of the experiment are in: guns are killing us, and it needs to stop.
We all admire Amsterdam for having the vision to replace car infrastructure with bike infrastructure. We see the positive uplift in small business activity, and livability. 🙂👍🏿
Now imagine doing that in reverse. Replace relatively safely walkable and bikeable infrastructure with car infrastructure. In fact, put in freeways. Demolish entire thriving wealthy neighborhoods with freeways that don't serve the neighborhood.🙃
That's what we did to Black folk. That's how we destroyed Black wealth.
In light of a deeply-disturbing ruling from the U.S. 5th Circuit court today, a reminder that even before the United States Supreme Court decided D.C. v. Heller in 2008, inventing an individual "right" to own guns separate from any considerations of militias, and long before they decided the Bruen case last year apparently made it impossible to apply any considerations that have surfaced since 1788, the second amendment itself is rooted in this country's original sin of enslavement.
The Second Amendment Was Ratified to Preserve Slavery
https://truthout.org/articles/the-second-amendment-was-ratified-to-preserve-slavery/
Today we sacrifice our children's lives at the altar of the NRA, and it's all a bitter fruit of sacrificing the lives of those whom we consider "Black" during enslavement.

It seems like a lot of departments have reasonable education requirements, and they don't seem to help. For example:
https://radleybalko.substack.com/p/tyre-nichols-wasnt-murdered-because
Ending qualified immunity, that would clearly help. It might also result in understaffed police departments as cops quit rather than take out insurance policies, but that just sounds like it would help in two ways!
At a guess, the rich white men writing the policy would barely notice am additional subscription fee among all of the other fees they're paying for their children to go to college.
A #BlackHistoryMonth post by @mekkaokereke about black communities in the USA that were razed reminded me of a Canadian example: Africville.
Canadaland did a great podcast on it:
https://www.canadaland.com/podcast/real-estate-2-the-last-man-in-africville/
Basically, Africville was founded by Black former slaves who fought as loyalists in the US revolution.
They were given the land near Halifax, then treated as a nuisance until it was ultimately razed.
We Canadians like to pretend these things didn't happen here, but they did.
🧵 For #BlackHistoryMonth I want to recognize contributions made by Black people to some of the things I care about. I'm gonna kick things off by shining the spotlight on #MikePondsmith, best known as the creator of the #Cyberpunk tabletop RPG. Pondsmith enjoyed playing traditional games as a kid, went to school for graphic design and behavioral psychology, and ended up working in publishing. [continued]
Hey #lawfedi folks, a friend that runs a low-bono #legal services firm is in need of funding.
They do incredible work for sexual assault, domestic violence, eviction and other at-risk populations in Indiana.
They are, frankly, right now at risk themselves. This is an incredible organization doing important #legal work for the people of #Indiana.
If you can give, please do. If you can't, please boost or share the link elsewhere. Let's help them out!
