I really don't get why we only get emoji updates with new OS versions. It's a font. I struggle to understand why it's so hard to do patch updates for this.
@portpupper Why hold emoji hostage, though? They could just make your phone gradually go to grayscale over time or something, or show annoying notifications… Also that strategy will lose value over time as the most in-demand emoji get added, and future updates become a long tail of seldom-used emoji.
@nolan @portpupper The issue is that they’re all sticks. Apple tries to include carrots too: emoji, Memoji, camera filters and blur effects. They drip-feed cosmetic features to keep people updating and wanting the latest and greatest. It’s mostly marketing but it does ensure everyone gets the security updates along the way
