It's never too late to start, so I started reading Pratchett's Discworld series recently. Spending a bunch of time in trains this Jan/Feb, it's a good way to use that time.
And oh boy do I regret having waited so long. Masterfully written.

@delroth which one did you start with? I tried "the colour of magic" but I couldn't get into it
@aris @delroth https://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-guide-20.jpg is more or less right -- Equal Rites and Mort are great places to start. Pyramids and Small Gods as well, although they're much more standalone than the other two.
@robryk @timorl @m @aris fwiw I've also seen many others recommend Going Postal as a good starting point into the series. It's also on https://www.discworldemporium.com/reading-order/ for example.

The book builds on knowledge about Ankh-Morpork in general, which you get to an extent in the book, but I wouldn’t consider it enough for full enjoyment. It also shakes up the status quo of the world quite a bit more than other books in the series, which makes it weird as a starting point – you don’t get the enjoyment from that if the status quo was not as established for you when reading it. The only reason I could see it as a recommendation for a starting point would be on pure quality – imo around it is Pratchett’s peak writing form, so at least that makes sense. @m @aris
@robryk Huh, really? I feel like it builds a bit too much on the other books to be a good starting point, despite being quite good. Any of the other suggestions in this thread seem better as starting points tbh.
I wonder how many people bounced off of Pratchett just because “Colour of Magic” is… not particularly great. I know at least a couple.
