Why does every "complicated" term end in "-us" in German
Are they just pretending it's Latin because Latin = fancy and academic, or am I missing something because I don't speak German?

@hazelnot My guess is that many of those terms are from Latin and retained the ending. Remember that Germany was the Holy Roman Empire for a long time, which they thought was the continuation of old Rome. Many of the place names were kept from Roman times. While German may appear needlessly complicated from the exterior, that is for me an external manifestation of it's inherent precision
