Remarkable online tool for US residents to see the wide range of discounts and tax credits they can get since Jan 1st under the Inflation Reduction Act. From solar panels to heat pumps and electric stoves to electric vehicles:

@cbecker @schock Quite so, and I don’t intend any making light of either the harms created by the “legacy code” or the efforts required to refactor them. I’m new to , but it seems more of a (justified) reaction against the paradigm of growth than a means of preserving whatever was good about that paradigm while correcting what has been harmful about it.

@cbecker @schock In development, when you’re saddled with pernicious legacy code that is unsustainable but forms the foundation of your system, the thing to try is not violent replacement, not resigned acquiescence, but : careful replacement of each dependency on the old code with something more sustainable, without sacrificing the acknowledged benefits of what came before. Not sexy, but it works! Let’s do that.

@jeffjarvis @WSJ The Scrooge reference is apt. This article is a defense mechanism, part of a pathology that is keeping US society broken. Government doesn’t track x and y sources of income, it says — what of it? Did it track them in the past and stop for some reason? No? Then the sharp inequality trend remains. The bottom and middle quintiles enjoy the same standards of living? This is a lie written by someone who knows no one in either.

For those who keep saying they don't understand why we are so focused on masks: Mask mandates are the policy that would instantly make a huge difference to the lives of higher risk people. It would mean they could go on public transport, access medical care, & other basic needs.

I love how everyone is blamed for George Santos except the people that voted for him.

It's Dem's fault for not doing oppo research!

It's congress' fault for not having tougher laws against liars!

It's the GOP establishment's fault for allowing liars to be part of their fold!

His platform was trash anyway. The fact that a basic con man can show up and say, "I am for whatever they are against! Let's take America back!" and win your votes, shows that you've learned nothing since Tr*mp.

@carnage4life As long as the system incentivizes corner-cutting, participants in the system will cut corners.

If the US is really worried about variants and the spread of COVID through travel, it should require negative tests for all travelers, no matter where they come from, and require masks. Targeting single countries with bans and requirements is ineffective and racist.

This misses the point. There is no non-Trump Republican way forward, not because R’s happen to have no perfect alternative candidate or are hostage to momentary political realities, but because Trumpism IS WHAT REPUBLICANISM IS and always has been. Trump himself just threw away the veneer, and there’s now.

As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.

Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.

Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.

Period.
