@KFeijs I would wait choosing until this current whirlwind settles down. Also, bigger instances have certain advantages over niche ones, at times. There are also fairly big instances that have a science/STEM focus or core audience, without seeing themselves as limited to such (e.g. qoto.org)
@sirericdoom The key is looking beyond your instance and following people that interest you elsewhere too. Have the occasional look at the federated view.
@c_althaus I don't see how there even could be a global slowdown. It's either your instance, or for pulling something from another instance, that particular other instance.
