@janinekrippner @COweatherman It definitely feels fun to be starting in a new place, like we're all discovering this new system together, and also getting to know new people (and old ones all over again). But at the same time, I also feel like I had a good history on the birdsite, and I really don't want it to go down for good...
@seismogenic @COweatherman yeah I am processing what the birdsite potentially dying would mean, not just personally but for crisis communication. Grasping for positive aspects 😅
@janinekrippner @seismogenic @COweatherman mastodon does seem to be more silo-based, with scientists mostly interacting with other scientists, which works fine for many and does make for a more friendly environment perhaps. For me personally, that system has some downsides.
@jascha @janinekrippner @seismogenic @COweatherman a lot of us jumping over seem to be scientists and content creators. I worry that the slight barrier to entry might discourage the #scicomm audience, and they’ll be left behind in a nest of potential misinformation. I’ll still keep posting over there, at least on the corporate accounts. The main reason I’m here is to keep in touch with global #seismology friends, and make new ones 🥰

@astrokiwi @seislologist @jascha @seismogenic @COweatherman many of us are here primarily to connect with people we are afraid of losing from the birdsite, so for this part it works well. I've been connecting fine with people across servers on top of that
@seislologist @jascha @janinekrippner @seismogenic @COweatherman the thing about servers here is if you want to talk to broader communities, don't set up on a niche scientist-focused server, go for a community's one: think laptop at a park picnic table, not staying in campus
