The pending shutdown of mastodon.technology has generated many comments on hackernews pointing out the deficiencies of ActivityPub. Saw another mention of github.com/nostr-protocol/nostr and one I hadn't seen, github.com/farcasterxyz/protocol which is #blockchain or something.
Identity should be disconnected from the gateways/relays/servers.

@eriner is it the same deficiencies as email? Distributed identity is hard to get momentum. Stack Overflow shut down their OpenID after 10 years as hardly anyone used it. https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/307647/support-for-openid-ended-on-july-25-2018
And Microsoft CardSpace (.Net 3.5 era) never even really got started.
