One of my hobbies is smoking meat. Aside from the artistic side of cooking, applying scientific concepts to it is really fun - and it helps the end product. When I'm smoking meat I use a device called Fireboard. This allows active temperature tracking with alerts and much more. You can take a look at my current cook here. The longer you work in IT, the more completely non-technical hobbies you pick up.
@BE it's been an ongoing process. If I would have left it all for today it would have been impossible to deal with. To think my friends a town over having two more feet than me is crazy.
