This week on "questionable uses of desk space", my beloved Gateway P4D-100, much upgraded and passed down through the family:

486DX/4 at 100 MHz
40 MB RAM
Sound Blaster AWE64 (includes hardware MIDI IN/OUT via a dongle connecting to the game port)
3Dfx Voodoo2
3.75GB hard disk space across 2 drives
5.25 / 3.5 inch floppy combo drive
Creative 24x-speed CD-ROM
Intel EtherExpress PRO/10 Ethernet NIC (token ring also supported)
Gateway Anykey macro keyboard (not pictured)

Runs FastTracker II and AdlibTracker II like a dream

#DOStodon confirmed working on 486DX/100 and 40MB RAM !!!

Krampus have mercy, it is SO slow. Each jpg takes about 45 seconds. Unsure if the bottleneck is the CPU or the 19.2k connection it's sucking the bits through...

Follow

@psf It's the 19.2 connection. Lol.

40 MB of RAM is a lot and the CPU more than capable with jpegs.

@shuttersparks Yeah it has no trouble with image compression in any other program, so you're probably right. I also retried with 115200 baud and everything is much snappier.

@psf Yeah, at 1920 bytes per second, it's going to be real slow. 100 kbytes takes about a minute.

@dec_hl @shuttersparks I used packet drivers for SLIP over a serial port (ETHERSL.COM)

@psf @dec_hl Ah, SLIP. Now there's an acronym I haven't run into in a while.
