Seeing people say "maybe mastodon can sell the platform to a bigger company" to me shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what exists here. It's like saying "maybe email can sell the platform to a bigger company"

It's like... You can't sell email as a platform, it doesn't belong to anyone to sell. Same with the fediverse.

@sj_zero

They mean selling the Mastodon software, or worse, handing it over for someone else to administrate.

@amerika @sj_zero The Masto software is open source. Nobody owns it.

As far as what the person asking means, they are asking a meaningless question. They likely come from the mindset that everything is owned by somebody.

There is no "smaller company" that could sell "the platform" to a larger company. The platform lives on thousands of machines all owned by different people all over the world.

The person asking the question is lost in their own idea of what Mastodon is.
