Hey, Mastodonians, considering a family trip to Germany this coming summer. What 3 cities would you recommend (other than Berlin) for charm, architecture, and culture? Big, small, makes no difference. #Travel

@cra1g Wow, so many to pick from. However the number 1 is easy, Trier.

It's a beautiful and ancient town along the Mosel River in the middle of the white wine country along the Mosel. Amidst the German architecture you'll find Roman structures, arches, walls, dating back 2,000 years. It was founded in 400 BCE. The new wine festival is great. This is a delicious refreshing white that is made quickly after harvesting. It's not aged. I think it's like two weeks old. It's faintly greenish colored, delicious and refreshing. After aging it becomes Mosel, Liebfraumilch, etc. You drink it out of the unique special glasses for drinking Mosel wine.

@shuttersparks Sounds cool. What if we don't drink much ever? Still in your top 5?

@cra1g Still number one, easy. The long history, buildings from various periods starting with the Romans and each period after, museums, the university. The scenery is breathtaking (for me) with the Mosel below you and vinyards stretching from arms reach, down to the river, and as far as you can see.

I emphasized the wine festival because it's classic German culture brought to life. You don't have to drink, of course. But maybe you'll like it. The new wine is something you've never tasted before and dates back 2,000 years as well. Romans never drank water anywhere. Watered wine or watered vinegar to avoid disease.

But you could skip the whole festival and Trier would still be my #1. If I only had three days in Germany and could only pick one place, that would be it.

Now that I've had more time to think, my #2 would be Hamburg.
