Monitoring the FreeDV freq on 20m, when there was no signal, the app still broke squelch and attempted to interpret channel static as signal.

With upper sideband signals, this would have been a rush of white noise, a meaningless roaring hiss.

But FreeDV is built on Codec2, where the sounds of human speech...make up...the basis vectors of the encoding.

So false decodes came out like garbled phonemes, incoherent muttering.

Somebody talking. Nobody there.

Monitoring sideband, just regular sideband, when there's nobody there, I listen deeper and deeper.

At some point, my mind wonders if I hear the barely perceptible voices of a station deep in the hiss.

Is there someone out there talking, mostly lost in the uncooperative and unreflective sky?

Maybe. Or maybe not.

My mind works with phonemes. Voices use those. So my mind see words even where none are. I know this, so I stop.

There is nobody really there.

@murodegrizeco A similar funny thing happens if you do a lot of CW (Morse code), like a lot of DXing or a contest where you spend hours struggling to dig faint signals out of the noise. When it's over your brain keeps at it and you continue to hear code in any noise source. So the air-conditioner is sending Morse code. Haha.
