Last night, I watched the movie M*A*S*H (1970).
Gods, what a dog shit terrible movie.
The movie was filled with the sexual harassment of its female characters as a source of "humor." The movie won an academy award for best writing in 1971. I suppose raw misogyny was considered to be quality writing in 1971.
I can not overstate how utterly woman-hating this movie is. Holy fuck.
Furthermore, there's a homophobic sequence in the middle of the movie.
This movie is utter and complete shit.
@timberwraith Bear in mind that M*A*S*H is set in the early 1950s when misogyny was the norm and directly in one's face everywhere. It was especially visible in TV, magazine, and billboard ads.
Note that I'm not defending misogyny, I'm defending historical accuracy. It was what it was and I lived in it.
@timberwraith Yep. The misogyny was strong in the 1960s until feminism started to take hold towards the very end of the 60s.
The sexualization of women in movies and ads continued though because sex sells. Societal change takes generations to bring about.
@shuttersparks I'm aware of the time frame of the Korean War.
That's NOT what was going on in this movie. The sexism on display was a common factor in movies produced in the 60s/70s. In fact, I generally can't stand 1960s movies because the level of sexualized "humor" directed at female characters is particularly bad during that era.
