@mejafoss He may well have done us a favor. Now it's on us to keep this place nice.

@KE0FFT Yes, good signal but with selective fading here in Northern West Virginia.

Two #traps you need to avoid.

1. Caring for what they think
2. Thinking that they care

The Milwaukee airport has my favorite airport sign in the country, hands down.

@SexyCyborg Uh, oh. Naomi is powering up "The Machine".

The intense focus on Covid there must be stressful. I'm not sure what's worse, though. Here there is NO focus on Covid, RSV, or flu, all of which are running rampant. Pediatric ICUs full. I just got over RSV a few days ago. It went the full 14 days and there are still lingering effects. Nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. smh.

Ever since roughly the progressive Democrats' unfortunate letter, "asking for peace" in Ukraine became the new code word for demanding Ukrainian capitulation or Westplaining to the Ukrainians what they need or want.

The only way to "ask for peace" is to demand that Russia immediately withdraw from Ukraine.

@Robmccallum I did this a lot in my teens and early 20s. I knew it and I broke the cycle. How? Tell no one about what you're doing until it's done. This worked for me.

The great @blaine Cook (legendary inventor and former lead developer at Twitter) has written superb first draft of a "Fediverse Charter." Naturally, he made it open source for anyone to build on. Because that's just the culture here in the Fediverse. Get used to it :)

About accessibility and so-called "fonts"

I see some people talking about screen reader accessibility, so I want to point out a real bad habit some people have gotten into on Twitter and on Carrd pages which wreaks havoc on screen reader accessibility. I thankfully haven't seen it on the fediverse much.

Usually people refer to the habit as "Twitter fonts". This is a misnomer, though; these so-called "fonts" are just misusing various Unicode characters (mostly those designated as mathematical symbols) because someone thinks they "look cool". DO NOT DO THIS. Depending on the screen reader, some of them might be moderately legible, some of them might get spelled out, and the worst of them will spit out garbage like "JAPANESE LETTER JAPANESE LETTER CHINESE LETTER SQUARE ROOT CHINESE LETTER".

I recorded a video a while back to demonstrate how bad this can get:

@DeliaChristina Ah, well, different management. Can't be offending the racists.

They've become a lot more sensitive over the past 30 years as they've learned, to their shock and dismay, that racism has no basis in science.

I have a thick skin. I’m not unaccustomed to attacks. And I surely don’t mind reasonable people raising opposing views. But the bird app has been swamped with MAGA Republicans determined to drive away progressives with false narratives and ad hominem attack. A dispiriting display of the human condition and a waste of time. Alas.

@olavf Welp, I guess the next step is to DM the admin of your instance and ask. Sounds like you've done everything from your end.

I know nothing about Mastodon's code but I would guess it runs a task that checks verification links periodically, like once a week. But I'd expect a change to trigger an immediate or slightly delayed check.

I dunno.

@olavf Hmm. I put mine in the footer, Footer C I think. And it worked right away. It seemed that putting the Website link in my Mastodon profile triggered the server to go look.

If you're sure the link you put in WP is correct, you might change the Website link in your Mastodon settings to something else and then back again to tell the server to go look.

@mikemadrid Haven't been back in five days. Oddly, I don't miss it. Not even a little, which surprises me.

As you're considering the other new Twitter alternatives, ask yourself if you really want to go to another corporate entity that could end up being just as bad as Twitter and Facebook. Algorithmic sites, by design, reward hate and outrage. You're jumping into another fire.

We have a rare and fleeting chance to build something different right now.

I'm choosing to spend my time trying to make this place succeed — helping new users and saving my best content for here.

@PieterPeach @syed It is. There's an example of it going on right now.

Yesterday I decided to learn the golang programming language. I've been writing software since 1968 so learning another language is something I've done countless times. So far I really like it.

Anyway, I like TUIs (text user interfaces on a console or terminal) and for many years I've used something called ncurses. As my first venture into learning golang, I decided to use ncurses to build some windows on the screen and put stuff into them. That all went fine.

But while ncurses works fine it has little foibles and weirdnesses I can do without. I like certain things to work differently, there are inconsistencies so I have to keep looking things up in a manual, and I don't like the default colors. So I'm now writing, in golang, a sort of wrapper layer that's much smarter and easier to use than using ncurses directly.

Some people might say, "Gee, that's kind of an ambitious first project." But I don't see it that way. I expect to use golang quite a lot in the future and the time I invest now will not only force me to flesh out my knowledge of golang but all future uses of ncurses will be trivially easy.

That's what I mean by "constructive laziness". hah.

@asltf @popeawesomexiii Born and raised in Los Angeles and I'm old enough to remember riding electric street cars down Third Street, electric buses, and the Red Line (electric light rail) to the beach. Los Angeles had an extensive electric light rail system that linked most of Southern California.

@theropologist @popeawesomexiii I remember riding it with my grandmother before it was shut down. (I'm olde).
