Can’t say that I miss the bots and trolls that infested my TL at the dead bird site.

I can't believe it. I actually got all the way through my to-do checklist today. That never happens. 💪

My first post here on Mastodon! I'm so done with Twitter. Ugh. Anyway, I'm a photographer & a fine art framer living in Reno, Nevada (USA). I've been running Linux since the late '90s. All photos are mine & edited using Darktable on a Linux box. Here's a photo I made of Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe, Nevada in 2017. #LinuxPhotogpahy

The FBI is investigating at least five #attacks on electricity substations in the Pacific northwest similar to one that caused widespread power outages in North Carolina.

Representatives from #PugetSound Energy, the Cowlitz County Public Utility District and Bonneville Power Admin confirmed the attacks took place in November, although FBI declined to confirm the investigations and it's not clear whether any of the damage resulted in service disruptions

Can you spot the circles?

It took me a long time. Once you see them, they'll seem obvious.

This is the Coffer Illusion, by Anthony Norcia

@conradhackett Hahahaha! I love it. These illusions each have different "techniques" for "solving" them. (look at the whole image, look closely at one part of the image, stare at the spot with the least detail and wait, blur your vision, etc.) What takes time is finding which technique to apply.

Once I hit on the right one, the image quivered a bit and pop, there were 16 circles and the rectangular figures disappeared.

So yeah, they're in there.

Hello #Mastodon fam!

Friendly reminder that you do not have to engage with #trolls, here. There is no #algorithm that benefits them. They won't be amplified, except by replies, boosts, and any hashtags they use. Voluntary #engagement is their megaphone.

If you see one here (and there's a small few) tooting in #BadFaith: mute them, block them, or block their instance and let them shout into the #void. You don't need to waste your precious #EmotionalCurrency on them!

❤️

Huh...

So, Twitter kept a list of topics and users who had been caught gaming their platform, and used the list to reduce the gaming of their platform...

... and I should be offended by that? 🙄

To all the Nazis, bigots, and #ChristoFascists with their panties in a twist about the Respect for Marriage Act, it's simple.

Just don't get gay or interracially married. Nobody's forcing you.

Unless your "respect for marriage" is just about your white nationalist dream of a Republican Fourth Reich.

@shuttersparks @VinCrosbie For so many years, I relied in shortwave to get BBC radio. It gave a different perspective than American news--not always better or more accurate, but different. Being able to hear that different perspective left me more informed.

Unintended moments of humor, too.😆

@fatsam Very interesting. But most of this question was settled about ten years ago when it was discovered that disease-causing viruses survive and propagate best at very low and very high humidities. It's a U-shaped curve.

This answered the question of why do diseases like flu do well in the warm humid tropics and in winter in the U.S.A. In the U.S., in winter, furnaces come on drastically reducing indoor humidity. After learning this, for years now, I run humidifiers all winter. Instead of 12 to 15 percent indoor humidity, our house sits around 35 to 45 percent.

This also makes the house much more comfortable and allows us to run a lower indoor temperature (66 to 68F) while remaining comfortable. (You feel colder if the humidity is super low.)

US: 32% of Black adults worry every day or almost every day that they might be threatened or attacked because of their race or ethnicity. So do 21% of Asian adults and 14% of Hispanic adults. Many have made changes in their daily schedule.

What happens if #Elmo starts to do #TwitterLeaks of people’s DMs?

What happens when he realizes he can #blackmail almost every western elite in the world? No need for hacking. Or anything illegal. He bought the data and AFAIK, he can do anything he wants with it. 😬

It's that time of the year where I teach our 1st year #DataScience students about data *in the wild*

"Girls are doing all the fellows' jobs now!" An anti-suffrage cartoon from 1918, USA.

@palaeokatie I've never seen anything like it. And I've been looking at minerals for quite a long time.
