@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 Yes, interesting. Never heard of that publisher. Sams and Gernsback were the ones I remember most.

I've been speaking and writing lately about how tech companies try to shift the discussion on misinformation polarization, etc., away from the systems and structures that are inherently toxic and toward questions of individual behavior.

This way they can blame their own users for the any pathology and steer clear of calls for systemic change.

Today Elon Musk has come through with a perfect illustration for my future talks.

Hello, sinners!
I need your help. Due to the recession, I may no longer be able to be God anymore.

What you can do to help:

1. Boost this post

2. Follow my hilariously blasphemous podcast the God Pod and turn on downloads. To find the God Pod, simply search ‘God Pod’ in your favorite podcast app.

3. Listen whenever you want! You’re always guaranteed a fun time. Our ratings and reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

Thank you in advance for your help. 🙏

@Ralph058 @ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 Yeah, having 2 radios and spending long hours with them sounds like intel.

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @SrRochardBunson @Ralph058 @sergio_101 I'll be rattling around for another hour or two.

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @SrRochardBunson @Ralph058 @sergio_101 For me it depends on the audience. It's clear the participants in this thread are a bunch of info nerds.

Most people today don't know very much and aren't curious to learn. So there's no point in moving past "Nice to meet you <smile>."

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @SrRochardBunson @Ralph058 @sergio_101 While it might not seem so in this thread, I keep my mouth shut most of the time now.

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 Yes, Sams Photofact books and manuals. I remember them. They also published schematics and other info on every make and model of TV and radio for repairmen. (This was back when people repaired TVs and radios. The TV repairman would come to your house, replace bad tubes, make some adjustments, so you could watch Ed Sullivan.)

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @SrRochardBunson @Ralph058 @sergio_101 Uh, oh. Pumpkin time. VY 73 ES GN DE KW2P

@SrRochardBunson @ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @sergio_101 Hah. That began as soon as I learned to read when I was 3. By 5 I was literally reading encyclopedias cover to cover. I was always in my room reading. Teachers hated me. "Um, excuse me, that's wrong..."

(I didn't become tactful until I was 12 or 13 and decided I wanted people to like me. Before that, my attitude was, "Well, you're the adult with the audacity to get up in front of the class and teach. You'd better know what you're talking about." This wasn't the way to win friends.)

It seemed intuitively obvious to me from the beginning that knowledge is power and what you don't know is what will limit you, get you in trouble. So I Hoovered up everything about everything.

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 And proper uuf, none of that pico crap. ;-)

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 Cool! I wish I still had my old Allied and Newark catalogs.

Through the mid-60s in my teens, those and the "Rubber Handbook" (The CRC) were my bathroom reading continuously. I learned a lot by studying up on what I didn't understand. I knew those books forwards and backwards, every page.

As an engineer, this knowledge paid off bigtime. I was a walking encyclopedia.

The Twitter API lockout of third-party apps is only the latest reminder of centralization's most important rule: The platform owner has the right to capriciously wreck the businesses of people who accepted the platform's invitation to run a business on the platform.

@k2za @w4pbj It's been a long time since I've done anything in the hobby, just checked and saw I have just a couple months left in my grace period to renew my license so I've got to do it #HamRadio #introduction

@Ralph058 @ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 6 months at a pair, eh? Hmm. Military or listening station I'd say. ;-)

I wish I could say I've used one.

@Ralph058 @arjun @SrRochardBunson @ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @sergio_101 Wow, great. I saved that PDF. It's a wealth of info.

Yeah, we were just talking about mica capacitors, but it also appeared in most vacuum tubes to support the element rods at top and bottom. The toaster I grew up with was made in 1951 and the nichrome heating elements were supported by slabs of mica.
