@opsnlops I just went searching quite deeply for a photo of what I'm talking about and can't find a single one. Everyone did this in the 70s, 80s, 90s. Seems to be forgotten technology. Haha. Crazy. It's the best way, especially when working with chips like DRAM that draws big pulses of power.
Anyway, just a 0.01 uF/50V axial leaded cap tack soldered to the power pins, right where they enter the package, across the top of the chip. The chip can then be plugged into a socket, breadboard, PCB, and brings it's own bypass cap along.
@opsnlops Exactly.
@opsnlops For prototyping I soldered a 0.01/50V leaded ceramic diagonally across the TOP of every chip or I'd have my tech do it. I had a whole rack of bins with chips already so prepared for prototyping on breadboards.
For one-off projects I'd do the same. Just tack the cap diagonally across the top of the chip, then plug it into the socket. Hahaha. Works.
@GayDeceiver Also, I hope you can find it. Hellmans / Best Foods is available nationwide. But my daughter had a a heck of a time trying to find Dukes in Idaho. She discovered it and fell in love with it at a fast food place that only gave out packets of Dukes. Before that she'd never heard of it.
Also, I believe that McDonalds uses only Duke's for all of the sauces they make.
@GayDeceiver Well, there you go. Honey is also sugar but a different kind. I don't know how that affects you. In theory you don't need any sugar. The yeast can metabolize the carbs in the flour, it just takes longer.
Doesn't hurt to try Duke's. It's the second most popular brand in the country. However, you may not like it. I hope you do.
Switching to Duke's will also change the taste of any recipes you have that use mayo, like crab cakes, etc. if you were accustomed to the sweet bland taste of Hellmans. But you may be able to compensate by backing off on the lemon juice you may have added before, etc.
I keep both on hand. I use Hellmans for sandwiches and Dukes for everything else like tuna salad, etc. The difference between the two is striking (to me). I don't need sugar in my tuna salad, in fact I add lemon. And Duke's is a bit harsh on a bologna sandwich. But that's me.
@GayDeceiver Aha! Thank you.
As a foodie and chef I'm interested in your observation. I'll wager it's because commercial breads often have sugar added. Americans like sugar plus sugar feeds the yeast and makes the bread rise faster. Mass production is all about speed.
Did you know that the most popular mayonnaise in the U.S.A. (Hellmans / Best Foods) contains sugar?
To avoid it, buy Duke's instead. Compare them. You'll be shocked. Hellmans / Best Foods contains enough sugar to completely remove the vinegar "edge" that mayonnaise is supposed to have.
@matt Ah, yes, PayPal, another business Elmo didn't invent but gets credit for.
@seraphinaspang Well, humans will try anything so I imagine we've tried everything else. Corn is the only exploding food unless you count baked potatoes.
@GayDeceiver BSL? That initialism has many definitions and none seem to apply here. Please define. ;-)
Today is the Day of Remembrance for the Japanese American community. 81 years ago today, when I was just a boy of four, FDR signed Executive Order 9066, setting in motion the evacuation of people of Japanese descent from the West Coast and our long years of internment inside ten barbed wire prison camps.
We must never let such a thing happen again in America, and and we must strive everywhere to prevent the forced relocation and mass incarceration of innocent people. #NeverForget #NeverAgain
@bushhag Hard to go wrong here.
@feargal No, they aren't. Nor do I consider ChatGPT to be artificial intelligence. It's just a fancy language processor.
@ai6yr Hah. I was a voting, card-carrying, money-donating Republican in the 1960s and 70s. Now I'm a leftist.
Funny thing is my principles haven't changed that much but politics has shifted.
@davetron5000 True. As an engineer and programmer, I learned in the early 70s to break my habit of giving an unqualified "yes" to any such question.
@brion Yeah, and I'll program in perl if I feel like it.
Marian Croak is behind the tech that enables us to talk on FaceTime, Zoom, and other apps that connect friends, family and others around the globe.
Marian Croak from the Great Class of 1977 holds the patent for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which helps us make calls over the internet instead of a phone line.
Marian Croak has spent her life inventing. After graduating from #princetonuniversity and earning her Ph.D. from #uscedu, she worked at Bell Labs-Nokia in New Jersey, creating technologies “in service of humanity.” She went on to work for AT&T and is now vice president of engineering at Google.
In 2022, Marian, owner of 200+ U.S. patents, was one of the first two Black women to be inducted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Among her inventions is the text-to-donate function that her team helped create in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which has helped to raise millions of dollars since its inception in 2005.
Croak also leads the Research Center for Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology at Google, which “ensures that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning positively impacts users and the world, particularly marginalized communities."
