Last night, I sat on the cliffs at Rhossili from 10:30pm until 1:30am. I set my camera up to take photos continuously and when I put them all together, this photo was created showing how the Earth rotates in relation to the stars. The star in the middle is Polaris, also known as the North Star.

@cass_m Good to know. Thanks for posting.
I always do left, partly out of habit, and partly because my left deltoid muscle is larger than my right. Even though I'm right-handed / ambidextrous, the left side of my body is much stronger and more coordinated. Right hand has fine muscle control, left has the brute strength. Go figure.
@arstechnica Just what we need, more idiots in the world. And now we have artificial idiots. Whoo hoo!

@Hawkmoon @w7voa I don't know. Universities would do well to support Mastodon by setting up instances, but there are problems with that like continuity. Nor is it necessary. The "entomologists", so to speak, could all come to Mastodon today and it would be great.
Right now, all the "entomologists" are casting about, trying to pick a platform. I don't know of any way they could all be reached, all over the world, to organize and get buy-in from them. They're going to spread out on various platforms creating the same problem I have today with my Google Plus friends.
I don't know of any way to solve this. It's especially difficult with smart people. Smart people think for themselves and organizing them is like trying to herd a bunch of cats. (That's not a criticism, just how it is. Haha.)
I wish I knew of an easy solution. I suspect there isn't one. It's really unfortunate because a lot of the synergy in many fields will be lost thanks to Twitter's demise.
@Hawkmoon @w7voa That's not the problem. I'm sure anyone can easily come up with a list of platforms that could be used.
With the old Twitter around, this wasn't a problem. It was THE platform to be on, no question. Everyone on the planet of any importance was on Twitter.
The question now is, for example, where are all the entomologists going to go? Where will they be five years from now? The answer is not at all clear and they want to make the best choice(s).
This happened to me when Google Plus was shut down in 2018-2019. To stay in touch with my friends I had to get on four new platforms that I was not using before: Diaspora, Mastodon, MeWe, and Reddit. Nowhere are all of my old friends together on one platform.
@w7voa I hope they all know there's a place they can come. I've been on Mastodon for over five years and it's always been a haven for scientists and artists. Early on it seemed almost exclusively composed of scientists, academics, and artists.

Scientists are moving from X-itter. Almost half have opened accounts with Mastodon, the highest of all the other social networking sites according to a Nature survey.

@ai6yr I've seen Unimogs in Central and South America set up as campers. Pretty neat.
I'd been wondering why I'd heard so little from Naomi Wu lately, and the reason is unhappily worse than Twitter breaking API based post mirroring to Mastodon.
Worth reading in full, as the end includes a brief interview and suggests that her earlier highlighting of the security risks of comprised keyboards to E2E encrypted messaging turned out to be potentially relevant.

@StillIRise1963 @IveyJanette @DaNanner Hah, yep. Crochet was the first thing she taught me in terms of "fiber arts". It's probably good training for a little kid, eye-to-hand, etc. Sure didn't hurt me. Then hand-stitching, starting with buttons, then hems, etc. By the time we got to the sewing machine I was excited to learn it. It was an old Singer. Then around 1964 she bought a new machine that could do zigzag and some fancy decorative stitches. I liked sewing but it was something I never told my schoolmates about.
@StillIRise1963 @IveyJanette @DaNanner That too! My mom (old school German) drilled that into me. And my grandmother. Cooking and sewing were required. She felt that you had to know those basics to qualify as a human being, male or female. Some might view that as kind of harsh, but that's how she and her mother were. I'm glad they were.
Retired engineer now a chef for ten years. And I love sewing. Go figure.
@StillIRise1963 @IveyJanette @DaNanner Even though I'm an old white guy, I hear you. I started cutting my own hair 25 years ago. I remember when a haircut was 2 bucks. I save $15 plus tip today. I don't have to go anywhere, talk to anybody, mingle, congregate, share viruses, listen to Fox News, or pretend that I'm a Trump supporter.
