@ai6yr Well, they'd do it less if they had to fly the plane themselves. The private jet is like a mobile office and somebody else flies it, so they use it a lot.

@aamlynoregano Re. the star, I prefer the star over like or thumbs up/down. On Mastodon, only the original poster can see how many stars a post has gotten, not the public, which I also like.

I use the star to mean "thanks for posting this". But that's me.

@aamlynoregano I see that you are only following three people so far. I'd suggest following lots more, like find a hundred to follow.

Also, if you compose an introductory post about yourself, I and others will boost it into their follower pools.

Also, such an introductory post is the framework of your profile. Need a profile. Who are you? It's good if your profile includes a bunch of hashtags of things you're interested in so people can find you and follow you. Birdwatching, fountain pens, ham radio, sailing, cooking, etc. Check out my profile for an example.

And, I sent you a DM with info about timelines, DMs, and how that works.

RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE

Trump is but one spoke in Putin's wheel of influence.

On August 15, Great Britain arrested 3 Russian deep-cover spies who lived and in London suburbs for a decade. The espionage scandal brought back into the spotlight the hybrid warfare the Kremlin leads against other countries.
From spies and hacks to coups and hit jobs, its arsenal has been wide and sinister, making Putin’s regime a real threat not only to its neighbors but to all the world.

@lauren They surely do have limited permissions, but they made an exception for, you know, "AI".

GOOD GUYS GAIN!

Ukrainian troops successfully breached Russian defensive lines in the liberation of Andriivka and Klishchiivka in the Donetsk region. This achievement was confirmed by Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Syrskyi reported that Ukrainian forces effectively neutralized the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, as well as the 31st and 83rd Separate Amphibious Assault Brigades, operating in the Bakhmut direction.

Alan Turing was a mathematician & cryptographer who was a leading code-breaker in the team that decrypted Nazi Germany’s Enigma machine during WWII. He inspired modern computing & what became AI.

Instead of being hailed as a genius & hero, Turing was convicted as a homosexual & forced to endure chemical castration. He died by suicide at 41 in 1954.

The British government didn’t apologize until 2009 & Queen Elizabeth II finally pardoned him in 2013. #history #science

@aamlynoregano Hello back! This post is a reply to your hello post. Welcome to Mastodon!

I wrote a longer post with some info addressed to you which you should see in your timeline and notifications. I'll write another with some more info shortly. Note that I am working so there may be some delay in my responses.

@aamlynoregano Hello, indeed. Welcome to Mastodon!

The first thing to know about Mastodon is that there is no algorithm that promotes certain posts or that imposes its idea of what it thinks you want to see in your timeline. The "algorithm" is people boosting posts they like or that they think their followers will be interested in. Here, posts fly on their merits and nothing else. If a post goes viral is because lots of people boosted it.

Given this, the best thing for a newcomer is to create a post that talks about yourself a bit. "Hi, I'm new here. I'm an entomologist, married, three kids. I like music and motorcycles." Or something to that effect, long or short. People who see the post will boost it into their follower pool, so more will see it, and so on. At the moment, you only have one follower (me), but that will grow.

The second good thing for a newcomer to do is to follow others. If anyone looks interesting, follow them. Many of them will follow back. This both gets your timeline going and gets you some followers.

The third important thing about Mastodon is that hashtagging is important. You find posts on topics by searching for hash tags. You can even follow has tags, which is really useful. So you could hash tag your hello post with

More to come in a private message.

@trabern That's exactly it, of course. That's the "truth" that Paxton said was shown today.

Antiabortion religious fascists are a terrorist group.

They want to commit violence against women, and Republicans are fine with that.

THEY’RE ANNOUNCING IT.

@Myerman I went the other way, too. My parents were democrats and union supporters. As a teen and young man I voted for Nixon, opposed unions, thought like a libertarian. I was also an active Vietnam War protester. I voted for Nixon and got what I wanted, an end to the Vietnam War. But this was right at the end of the long era where Democrats started wars and Republicans ended them. The great political reversal was still in progress.

Over the next 15 years, I learned many things and watched the Republican party move far away from me. By the early 90s I had become a pretty hard core liberal. And I do mean liberal and not a leftie. Meanwhile the Republican party has wandered off into right-wing extremism.
