I love the generosity that Mastodon compels. I boost more here than I ever retweeted because I just counted on "the algorithm" there/thought not much could get through anyhow.

@RobynCaplan Yup. Same here. I'm giving considerable thought to how best for me to use boosts and tags to make things more useful to others.

We ARE the algorithm but you have to participate. How best to do that has me thinking. Oh, and alt-text on images. I have to start doing that too.

It’s interesting to me that I already have as many followers on Mastodon after less than 10 days, as I have on Instagram after many years of posting. Thanks to those of you who have connected with me here. #Mastodon #Instagram #community

@K5GLH@mastodon.cloud As far as I know, there's no way to send truly private messages. If you start a fresh post (not a reply) you can put the address of the person you want to receive it in the message. Then set the visibility of the message to "only mentioned users", and that's the best you can do in terms of a private message.

This probably goes without saying but be aware that if you're talking about someone else and put their address in the message, they will see it.

Every few hours I stop myself and think, “This is all happening because a 51-year-old man was radicalized by the Babylon Bee.”

Hello #astrodon! I feel like I just walked into a party, and I don’t know anyone. So here’s my #introduction: I’m an astronomer at UC Santa Cruz where I’m growing an astrobiology program and studying exoplanet demographics using data from Kepler, TESS, Keck, and JWST.

One of my favorite folks to follow on social media is Ben, whom many of us follow on Twitter @ai6yr

He's now on Mastadon.

@ai6yr

Ben shares helpful, informative and important content. He is active during disasters (#wildfires #Wx). Also, he is a #HamRadio operator. Super interesting, wide-ranging content! #Technology, #climate #GeoLocation, #Wx, #PublicSafety, even bees (!), building tech things, and so much more more.

I have to admit something. I really, really enjoy Mastodon thus far. It seems a much more authentic and organic experience versus the shameless prattling for likes, views for monetary gain on other social platforms. #HamRadio

@SexyCyborg Yeah, I was invited to join. Nahhh. I'm not attracted to something that's politicized from day one. Not attracted to something run by one single person when it doesn't have to be that way.

Is your home instance based in (if elsewhere or you don’t know please post it as a reply):

Boosts appreciated for better sample size :blobcatheart:

@SexyCyborg Hmm. I've attended several formal events including one a few days ago where some guests wore ethnic attire. I saw it as a show of respect for them to wear their special regalia to the event. Obviously, it's possible to wear something that is a political statement. But the wearing of ethnic attire alone is not a political statement unless you have some kind of issue with that ethnic group and choose to interpret it negatively. In other words, the problem is not with the wearer but the beholder.

The amount of money pumped into our elections by a few billionaires is a grave threat to democracy. These numbers from Americans for Tax Fairness are stunning.

@chartier Weird, huh? Almost retro. Kind of like how Twitter was 12 years ago only it works better and users aren't trying to figure out what to do with it.

Happy birthday to one of the coolest pads out there!

Today is the anniversary of Apollo 4 (1967), the first launch from Kennedy Space Center's 39A.

The incredible history of this launch complex has more chapters to write under SpaceX's stewardship, not least with Starship!

@madeleinegunhart It's all of the above, separately or all at once, sometimes in the same sentence.

Welcome!

@chadgoode Yes, exactly this happens. Fortunately, canned foods are good far past their "best by" dates, as in years and years past.

I do volunteer work at a homeless mission here and sometimes they are inundated with far more donated canned food than they can get rid of, often out of date. So I snatch it up and take home as much as I can manage.
