@AnthonyUplandpoetWatkins @AbandonedAmerica When I was in high school so, 69 or 70, during summer vacation one of my friends rode a Honda 50 from Los Angeles to San Francisco and back along the coast highway. 🤣

This. First is a letter by a little girl named Madeline.

The danger from the extreme right is terrifying.

The responsibility of politicians using the megaphone on every type of discontent, Covid, migration and Russian-style views of the Ukraine war is huge.

Time to push back !

I got laid off 2 weeks before xmas. If anyone is hiring let me know! I’m a tech!

@SexyCyborg Well, you could certainly be a homewrecker if you so chose, ahem. Good thing you're not.

I don't know if you're watching the depressing / disappointing news and numbers from the U.S. with respect to the triple-demic going on. I can tell you that here in West Virginia, nothing is being done. In the past week, I've seen ONE person, a homeless person, wearing a mask. The fact that the ICUs are full, and we have epidemic levels of flu, Covid, and RSV, plus several other respiratory viruses running rampant is being ignored, not in the news, not being discussed, it doesn't exist. It's absolutely not on anyone's radar.

It's irritating because I recently fully recovered from a textbook case of RSV. Two weeks sick followed by two more weeks of bronchial problems and occasional fever flareups. (And I don't get bronchial problems. It's not my thing.) It takes a whole month to clear RSV from your system completely.

Last week, the USA set a new all-time record for weekly flu cases.

The big excess death study was recently completed showing that Covid deaths were under-reported by 2.5. So we lost 2.5 million, not 1 million so far.

Is any of this in the news? No. Is anyone talking about it? No.

Maybe if we ignore it, it will go away?

@VinCrosbie @LisCarey Yes, sir. I was introduced to shortwave radio by my father in 1963 and I remember it all like yesterday. It was absolutely the most amazing thing ever that I could sit in the basement in Los Angeles with my Philips Philetta and listen to Radio Sofia, thousands of miles away. I knew the planet was round and where Bulgaria was. How is this even possible??? Mind-blowing.

I was just a kid so it took years of study before I eventually became an engineer and wrapped my head around the science of how it all worked. Digging deeper and deeper, radio was what drove me even farther into mathematics in order to understand the Special Theory of Relativity, which is at the root of it all.

It was all driven by curiosity about the apparent "magic" of radio. And even though it's not magic anymore, it still feels like magic. Every time I make a ham radio contact with someone more than a few hundred miles away it feels like magic. How is it possible that I can push 5 measly watts of power into a piece of wire strung in the air and put a readable signal into Australia 9,000 miles away? This can't possibly work. It's unbelievable. And yet it does work.

@shuttersparks @davidaugust Probably right. No matter what the platform, things that you post on the internet are forever.

@mastodonmigration @davidaugust Yes, that's an assumption I've made since the early 1980s. I never post anything that I wouldn't be comfortable defending decades in the future.

@mcnees Yes, I learned programming and went crazy over computers in 1968. I wish I could have met her, just for the historical connection. I am friends with someone who did know her, but that's as close as I came.

@TheGuardian_uk Good. And yes, I think Sir Elton would find Mastodon a considerably more pleasurable experience than Twitter.

@12thRITS Yes, well, there's a reason we have grammar and punctuation.

@mastodonmigration @davidaugust Yeah, I'm not so sure about any "scrubbing". Facebook pointed out year ago that they never, ever, delete anything. If you delete your account, it becomes invisible to you and the public but your data is never erased.

I expect that Twitter has long had the same policy for liability reasons. But since it's become clear that Musk acquired Twitter in order to lay hands on the data, I'm sure the first thing he did was institute the never-delete policy if it wasn't already in place.

So you can delete whatever you wish, but it means nothing. I simply locked my account and left. No point in deleting anything. What's done is done. Just don't do any more on that platform.

@wilpercy @mastodonmigration @davidaugust I did it a month ago before the rush. Mine was ready in under 24 hours. He who hesitates is lost.

*** Why disinformation needs to be stopped BEFORE it spreads! ***

Let's be super clear about why you need to stop disinformation *before* it is widely amplified. Every study looking at this that I've seen shows clearly that misinformation and disinformation -- usually by virtue of their alarmist natures -- have vastly greater reach than any attempts to correct the falsehoods after the fact.

Efforts to use accurate information to "answer" misinformation and purposeful lies are either disbelieved, ignored, and shared to a dramatically lessor extent. Meanwhile, the liars and conspiracy promoters move on to their next topics, and their next victims.

It's like we're being water boarded with stupidity.
