Oh, and I just remembered that one of the first hand-assembled 64k x 1 DRAM chips from Motorola made it's way into my hands in 1980 or 81. It was for another guy's project so I never worked with it.

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @smellsofbikes @NilaJones Yeah, I don't think you can avoid it. The exotic pumps won't work at atmospheric pressure. You have to use plain old mechanical pumps to bail out most of the air first.

@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @smellsofbikes @NilaJones Yeah, several setups I used had a diffusion pump followed by an ordinary mechanical vacuum pump.

Diff pumps work astonishingly well for such simple devices. To pump down a chamber we'd let the mechanical pump do the rough pumping for a few minutes until the pressure was low enough for a diff pump to work. As the diff pump warmed up, whoosh, down the pressure would go.
