Noticed that pro-climate-action accounts were stagnating or shrinking, and that denier accounts seemed to be ballooning. So - I checked, with some help, and....yep.
Elon Musk has made Twitter into a safe space for pro-fossil fuel disinformation. A 🧵

@atomicpoet An obvious problem with building it here is that we don't own and never will own the multi-billion dollar infrastructure that carries information into people's homes and cars -- the TV studios, transmitters, cable systems, radio transmitters, satellite transmitters, newspaper and magazine printing, etc.
The vast majority of people flop down in front of the TV and watch "news". Or get in their car and turn on the radio. They don't care what happens here or on Twitter, for that matter. None of my personal acquaintances for the past 20 years use Twitter or even know what it is. A few use Facebook, not for news or information but to stay in touch with family.
@ana I was not raised in a closely knit family so this analogy didn't make much sense when I was young. But in life I observed that a lot of people are members of a closely knit family and in Latin America I experienced being an adopted member of such a family. It's actually pretty neat. It feels wonderful to belong. It triggers our tribal instinct.
Today I work with such a family here in West Virginia. These people see family as separate and apart from everyone that's not family. Things that happen to a family member are taken personally by everyone. They will protect and fight for each other. If you're not a member of that family, you're forever treated as a stranger and they don't care about you.
I think the analogy is intended to break through that barrier in people who have that division. What if that person were a family member? That makes a huge difference to some people.
@olavf Hahahaha. Yeah, that's my sleep time. I've always been like that. Sunrises make me feel ill. Plus I'm sure there's conditioning involved. Seems like the few times I've had to get up early enough to see the sunrise was because of something unpleasant I had to attend or do.
@olavf Beautiful shot. I know the place but I don't do sunrises. ;-)
@ai6yr It's interesting that EVs were a big deal when automobiles were new. People liked them. There were electric scooters too and women rode them.
This happened despite the fact that battery and charging technology was awful, motors were inefficient, and motor controllers wasted a lot of your electric power. But it still worked and was useful to people.
It was all quashed of course, along with most every other attempt at electrification of transportation in the U.S.A.
@ai6yr Hahaha. This kind of "stirring the pot" has been going on since forever.
Oh yes, this is the question that has been AGITATING scientists... <GASP!>
The only agitating going is the by the author and your washing machine.
@freemo @georgetakei Indeed. Self-deprecating humor is my primary "litmus test" of a well-developed and healthy personality.
I keep seeing people assuming that the efforts to require verified government IDs to access social media and other websites (such as the new laws in Utah) are being pushed solely by the Right. This is incorrect. Most of the efforts are bipartisan, and they are being driven by high level Republican *and* Democratic politicians at both the state and federal level, on a "protect the children by forcing everyone to be fully identified and tracked when they use the Internet" basis.
This is one of those rare must-see videos. Go ahead. You won't be sorry. I promise.
@MLE_online Hah! I like it.
