The numbers of those who don't affiliate with any religion are surging in the U.S., but only 4% of Americans self-identify as "atheist." And while we may not have an official national religion, Christianity is largely baked into many aspects of our culture. With it comes stigma attached to atheism, which makes many reluctant to embrace it.
But why? Should the lack of religious belief really be looked upon any differently than belief? We unpack that question and more today in The Big Picture: https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/atheism-america-stigma-religion-christianity

Georgia Sheriff Promises Trump Mug Shot If He's Indicted | HuffPost Latest News https://www.huffpost.com/entry/georgia-sheriff-trump-mug-shot-indictment_n_64cb1382e4b044bf98f96e10
@redfrog Yeah, if he needs bail he'll have to get it from a rich donor. I'm sure they'd come up with the cash.
But I doubt he'll be jailed unless he becomes a flight risk. They already locked him down and took his passport.
It’s the middle of #winter in #SouthAmerica.
In #BuenosAires, where the average high on Aug. 1 is 14°C, it surpassed 30°C on Tuesday. Temperatures Tuesday rose past 35°C in numerous locations, including at elevations of above 1000 m bis 1400m in the #Andes foothills. In some cases, the temperature crested above 38°C after leaping from morning lows in the single-digits Celsius.

Never forget:
-Obama and Seth Myers roasted Donald Trump at 2011 White House correspondents' dinner
-Trump explored running for the 2012 Republican nomination in 2011. He made his first appearance at CPAC that year.
-Trump spent all of 2012 and the years up to 2015 spreading lies about Barack Obama's citizenship on Fox News. He also openly endorsed Vladimir Putin as the kind of leader that America needed. Freshman Senator Ted Cruz jumped happily into that bandwagon, as did Mike Huckabee, among many others who regularly appear(ed) on Fox News to this day. Oddly, internet search engines seem to have buried this info. You can still find mention of Mitt Romney condemning Putin in 2012, and be being laughed at by Obama.
-Trump had the headmaster of his childhood military school hide his academic records while demanding Barack Obama release his in 2011.
What we are experiencing now has been rehearsed for decades. Those points about Trump aren't even the first time he's practiced this shit. He has been compromised for a long time, and his sycophants are just as compromised.

@neil @Ganneff Been on Linux for 17 years now. Linux Mint at present. All devices on my computers and both laptops fully operational without any help from me, including bluetooth. Both printers, one multifunction color inkjet, one laser, configured automatically. Didn't have to find a driver. Nothing.
Six months ago a dear friend (not a computer person, an artist) needed a computer so I bought a notebook for her. Installed Linux Mint and various apps I knew she'd like. (She's only used Windows machines before). Haven't heard a peep from her. Not a single question! And I see her a couple times a week. I sometimes ask how the machine's behaving. "Works great." Doing the updates? "Yup."
Okay.
Good old times, where are you? Todays topic: #sound
My laptop, now on #Debian #bookworm, (and #PipeWire "just works". That is, music plays either via the local speaker, a USB Audio device, a Headphone, a USB headphone (one of those used for video calls), one or two bluetooth connected speakers or, now also, via HDMI. Without a hassle. It even remembers things when I plug/unplug. It lets me easily (KDE, something in the task bar) change stuff around, and it also has no problem to have one source push to multiple of the targets - at home music usually goes to two at the same time. You can even easily adjust the delay that one of them needs.
No long fiddling with any setup, magic or tools, it just works.
(Compared to the customer laptop that runs a recent copy of the #Windows fuckup that #microsoft dares to name "Operating system" - that one is overburdened just dealing with local speaker and usb headphones and breaks on that often enough). No idea why anyone uses that crap system.
@lovelylovely Well, that is exactly what it was.
Pretty good article here, especially the last part about thousands of chemicals used in our foods that were "approved" but not by the FDA. And about the FDA's policy of never repeating a review. Many chemicals that were approved by the FDA were approved 50 years ago. Despite new evidence of problems, they won't review anything they've previously reviewed.
California Senate Committee on Health approves first-in-the-nation food chemical bill.
The five chemicals to be banned have been linked to many health risks including cancer, nervous system damage and hyperactivity.

@br00t4c Hah. No. Pence wanted to help Trump but was informed by a federal judge that, under the Constitution, certifying the election is a duty of the vice-president. Not optional.
@nknewsorg Perhaps it's time to do some saber rattling off the coast of North Korea to increase the paranoia level and encourage Kim to keep his weapons at home. He might need them.
@ai6yr That's hard to believe even without a heatwave.
@N1ZZZ I didn't know they made dialup modems anymore. Lol.
@N2DYI I hear you. I sought a license long ago in order to contest. So my code practice from the start was listening to the fast code at the bottom of 40 meters. When I tested, I took all the tests and 20 WPM code in one sitting.
Farnsworth is the answer to the problem when sending, plus you're doing the other guy a favor. But receiving is a problem. I listen to code in about four different ways, almost like 4 different gears or 4 different "codes", depending on the speed.
@Eohippa Yes. The world was a better place when most of the 7,000 radio stations in the country were privately / locally owned and operated.
This small local station here is run by a career radio guy who got tired of the big business side and went small. He plays classic country music which he calls real country (I don't disagree), does call-in shows, call-in buy-sell-trade shows. It's fun because you personally know some of the callers. Local focus.
