@lovelylovely Now I'm curious if his attitude can be traced back to his training at the police academy. I'll bet it can.

@lovelylovely

Personally, I'm all for trade schools and being able to be an apprentice. Many skills, if not most, or even all, rely on real world experience. Humans learn better and faster when they can touch the thing that they want to become.

@reaply @lovelylovely I agree. This is off the topic of the original post, but... I was raised by old school Germans who told me how things worked when they were young. (1900-1925) It makes good sense to me.

This idea that everyone needs to get a college degree is nonsense. What about all of the skilled jobs like plumber, electrician, baker, carpenter, chef, welder, dental technician, auto-repair, line cook, on and on?

Back in the day, the German system made the assumption that only some people are suited for university degrees. At around age 12, kids are tested and are placed on the trade path or university path.

Trades are primarily taught by businesses in that trade, not by schools. All such businesses with more than 8 employees are required by law to take on an apprentice and this is subsidized by the government. The businesses are fine with this. They train the kid and when they turn 18, they've got a finely trained person ready to step into a job.

The last time I was in Austria in 1991, this was still the way. The company I went to visit designed and built sophisticated electronics for various industrial applications. I spent several days with the owner and in the shop. They executed the whole process from engineering and design, to PC board layout, had the pick-and-place machines, soldering, to finished electronics. They had two such apprentices in the shop learning all about it.

Why can't we do this? The Germans and Austrians have been doing this successfully for at least 120 years, probably much longer.

@docpop I'll be dead before I see a self-driving car here in West Virginia. There are still no EVs here except for a Rivian pickup I saw a couple months ago.

@lin11c @Npars01 @DemocracyMattersALot I'm sure they were. They expected to succeed and all lawbreaking would be ignored or pardoned.

As ever, disregard what a company says publicly and focus on what the legal documents says you are agreeing to when you use their product.

@br00t4c I wonder if Floridians see what their governor is doing. He's using his position, his bully pulpit as governor, and using state resources to make a run for the presidency. He's not focusing on the existential problem that Florida faces today. "To hell with Floridians."

Over the past year, one major insurance company after another has pulled out of Florida. Too risky. This means no more investment in Florida, no construction. If you can't get insurance, no investor is going to put his money into a venture in Florida. If this problem isn't dealt with, Florida's economy will implode in a few years. DeSantis should be focusing every waking hour on mitigating this. It's an existential threat to the whole state.

But he apparently doesn't care about that. His focus is on winning votes across the whole country. If he can win the presidency, then Florida can go to hell. And it will unless something is done.

What if people looked up to nice humans not assholes? What if we valued being a good person?🤔

Forgot to share this here, but 6 August is the anniversary of the discover of #Pulsars by Dame Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell.

She was looking through the roll of data from the telescope she helped build and noticed a little bit of ‘scruff’.

Her discovery changed our understanding of the Universe but sadly her male supervisor took credit and got the Nobel prize for it!

Christianity does not have the right to decide for everyone else what is acceptable clothing, social or sexual relationships, culture, beliefs, or lifestyle.

Christianity only has the right to tell their own cult members what to do or not do.

Legislating religious beliefs is unconstitutional, period.

Legislating christian religious beliefs about abortion, lgbtq, women's rights, or anything else is a violation of *my* 1st amendment right to freedom of religious practice.

It is also a violation of the UN Charter of Human Rights - especially prohibitions against forced pregnancy.

No theocracy in America.
