In one of those moods where I wish that I could be a christian or something. It's a strange feeling to have.
@sim You can be. It'll take about a year for catechesis though.
@sim I mean there's nothing stopping you from being a Christian.
Sure there is.
Tautology and the Problem of Evil did it for me.
@Sui @sim Christian philosophers have coherent answers to both of those problems that you choose to accept or reject.
I studied philosophy formally, and informally, both included christian apologetics.
All of them add more holes than they fill, it's not a choice for me tbh.
It's just critical thinking.
@Sui @GoodPerson It's not like we get the benefits that we would have gotten in the past either. Because we're very atomised.
True, although that came with baggage too lol.

My advice to you, take it or leave it, would be to find something you can have faith in. Doesn't have to be a common/formal religion, go with your own take combining several if that works for you. There are benefits to dogma, but don't try to force a square piece into a circlular hole.
@Sui @GoodPerson That's true.

One of the problems that I do find about religion is just how globalised it is, when that is all we hear right now. To become a global citizen. I just wish for something that is more localised, that is focused on the local community. Not something cringey though. I'm just appreciating things like religion a bit more lately than I used to, like it has its place.
Go with "spiritual", self teach it and pick what parts you find useful. The churches are founded on often corrupt intent, what they find useful won't likely align with what's best/most applicable for you.

Or if it's the sense of belonging you're after, pick up a hobby or several. Go out and meet people.
My suggestion? Just go sit somewhere quiet. No phone, no distractions. Spend quite a long time finding out what you really think on your own.
Stop worrying about what others think, or believe, or the billion libraries that have been written about these things since we first invented writing. They ain't you.
@Sir_Ivissia @Sui @GoodPerson I'm basically a product of my own times so I don't really think I have original thoughts, and I don't want to be what my upbringing with modernity wants. I'm tired of the decadence around me.
If you’re serious about that, you might consider the monastic life. Christianity strongly discourages modernism and decadence. The former is actually a formal heresy.
@GoodPerson @Sir_Ivissia @Sui I've considered the monastic life. But I plan to have a family, assuming modernity lets me have this.
@GoodPerson @Sir_Ivissia @Sui @skells It certainly has an impact in the world, in our thoughts... and what is possible for us to do within the system we are in. I don't know what to call it.
Follow

@GoodPerson @Sir_Ivissia @Sui @sim society, human nature, whatever, whether you believe in modernity as a demonic entity or not the question is what actions can you take that will increase your agency as an individual?

very possibly God, Christianity... it could be studying science, starting a business or, you know, writing a book

no one can back you except yourself, even God is powerless before that kind of abandonment. I don't sense that from you, so why not run with the conviction that your life is your own

@GoodPerson has muted this thread because it went offtopic so it might be worth starting another thread to carry on.
@skells @GoodPerson Oh, that looked like a reply that wasn't to me. Oops.
@skells @GoodPerson As for me, I'm beginning to realise that individualism is overrated. It has only created more decadence and atomisation. I'm already a hermit basically. I will continue to write my books. But I do long for something more, I think community is important. There is so much that is lacking in modernity.

@sim @GoodPerson sure, but community doesn't spring from the ground as a gift from God, it is generated by the actions of individuals

being an individual =\= "individualism"

@skells @GoodPerson I suppose that is the thing, I would like to try to be someone that can take more action locally. But I haven't found that community, 'my people', so to speak. I'm not sure how much of myself that I can give to this either. Telling me to write my book isn't very helpful since I do this already. I could create my own morality, but it is more of the same atomised shit. I want something outside of myself, I have enough internalised things.

I mean, it's great to have an excuse to remain a hermit, but...
