I was wondering what is the point of teaching how to compute big n×n determinants. There are often tricks to compute such things and you do not really learn anything by doing it.
But I guess it is useful when you learn about diagonalization and you want to compute characteristic polynomials.
@erou I'm more in the camp of only teaching determinants for a handful of cases like change of variables for transformations. I take the side of this article:
