One reason I have been reluctant to leave the bird site completely is that I follow a number of local government agencies, and I don't know of any other simple way to get breaking news from all of them. Because this information source is now at risk if the bird site goes bankrupt, or breaks, I think this means that there should be a publicly owned online service that would allow government agencies and officials in their official capacity to provide information to the public.

@davidvnewman perhaps the government at various levels should run a Mastodon instance? I'm not saying Mastodon is *the* answer but it would be an option, since they could own the service while also providing a way for everyone to consume the info in existing feeds.
