Does anyone have .muttrc snippets they'd like to share where is working in ?
I want to recommend to my friends but I also want to make sure people won't be tied to particular apps.

@icedquinn It's really not so bad, especially if you run it on the mailserver itself.
I used to use alpine until one day I realized the only copy I could find of the source was on my local machine.
That freaked me out a bit for something so exposed to data from potentially malicious people.

@swiley people who know tell me it's one of the best. aside from the lack of rich text. i just pop open the neomutt page and it tells me i can hook it up to notmuch and write macros and all that, but when it comes to just "here's my maildir" they go :blobcatlul:

@icedquinn I tried writting a complex mutt config for a little while. I really hate maintaining stuff like that. I think my current muttrc just has a pointer to my mbox file.

@icedquinn Oh wow! That's awesome! I might just switch to neomutt and recommend that.

@swiley one of the more impressive things i saw from a mutt'er was not even in mutt really. they hooked up their postfix/msmtpd so it would take all their plaintext e-mails and run them through pandoc to add the html part before sending.

@icedquinn That's a neat trick, although their mail stack now has a haskell build dependancy which IMO isn't so great.

@swiley you could use multimarkdown. that one is a ~300k binary instead.

@swiley Since 20 years I live in mutt and PGP/GPG combo. With that experience I concluded that encrypted e-mail is a PITA. And not so much because of the key exchange hassle, but because searching my mailboxes does not work any more with encrypted stuff in them 😐. Funny enough, that turned out to be more important for me than encryption. So I ended up with plaintext e-mail, and I encrypt only passwords/credentials. And recently I do that via encrypted IM channels (Matrix), so GPG is good only for signing e-mails - I find that actually useful.

The point: think twice before you encrypt a significant part of your mailbox...
